Schell Plant Traffic Manager Monsanto Chemical Company 500 Monsanto Avenue Sauget, IL 62206-1198 Dear Phil: At approximately 11:20 a.m., Wednesday, February 20, a Union Pacific eastbound freight train derailed at a point between Boonville and Wooldridge, MO. Four of the derailed cars contained phosphorous. A broken rail punctured one of these cars, resulting in a release of lading and subsequent fire. A second car was punctured by a broken pipe which resulted in the delayed ignition of the exposed lading. As a member of the Monsanto Phosphorous Emergency Response Team (PERT) you were one of the first persons to arrive at the scene of the accident. Your assistance in our emergency response effort played an invaluable role in the successful resolution of this incident. Your skill, knowledge, and professionalism set a standard of excellence that will long be remembered by everyone who was at this derailment. Your coordination of the elements of the responding organizations was of supreme importance. Fire officials, our derailment contractor, and Union Pacific employees on the scene have all made glowing comments regarding your efforts on our behalf during the four day cleanup.
