Saunders ED The 2nd Quarter Competitive Safety and Housekeeping Inspection for the Shops Area was conducted on 6/12/84 by the inspection team of Tom Ryan, Casey Yauger, Charlie Loney and Bob Hammann. The Machinists won the best craft award. Inspectors were particularly impressed with the safety awareness and attitude of these people. Other ratings are as follows: Boilermakers - Outstanding Carpenters -Outstanding Insulators -Outstanding (. Instrument - Good Pipefitters - Good Painters - Satisfactory Electricians - Satisfactory Operating Engineers - Satisfactory General comments: * Safety attitude and awareness were generally at a high level throughout the entire Shop area. Personnel were not only interested in maintaining good work areas and conditions, but improving them. * The safety display boards located throughout the Shops area are well done, eye-catching and have involved people throughout the crafts. * Lunch boxes were still scattered throughout the work area and not placed in cabinets provided (repeat from last two inspections). * Although it was a quiet day noise-wise in the Main Shop while the inspection was in progress, there is still concern that hearing protection is not being worn at all times when needed. Individuals must be conditioned to use hearing protection like other safety equipment and immediately don hearing protection when noise in the Shop increases. * It is recommended that safety shower and eyebath installations be checked in all Shop areas. In those cases where a manual block valve exists, the valve should be car sealed open to prevent inadvertent blocking of the safety shower or eyebath, rendering it inoperable in times of emergency. Some are in poor condition and constitute a tripping hazard. * Although tail hoses on pneumatic tools were not tagged, it is the feeling of this committee that tagging is unnecessary as the hoses are checked each time the equipment is returned to Stores. Visual inspections should be conducted by the individual prior to using the equipment. * Need to review Procedure Bulletins to ensure latest copies are available. (Latest table of contents attached.) Specific comments: Operating Engineers 1. Need to improve food storage area in kitchen (i.e. install cabinet). 2. Bicycles parked inside building. 3. Much trash in the locker room, especially above the lockers. Also bicycle tires behind door. 4. 5-gal. can of solvent in storage room. 5. Fire code sticker missing on phone in supervisor's office. 6. Hose not pinned at steamerette station. Also no inspection tape on steamerette hose. 7. Utility station by steamerette area - out-of-date hose inspection. Signs missing. 8. Storage building is cluttered. 9. No extinguisher in box 11 on east side of building. Either install fire extinguisher or remove box. (Repeat.) 10. Grounds were cluttered on the east side of the control house. 11. No ground cables on oil drums. Electricians 1. Replace alarm sticker on phone in power monitoring room. 2. Test lab: (a) Relocate fire extinguisher so that cabinet door can be opened. (b) Need to relocate materials on top shelf on west side or have a stepladder available so books can be removed without standing on chair or desk. 4. Fan without grounded plug located behind west test stand. 5. Old pallets and trash on west side of building. 6. Drill press located too close to Coke machine. 7. Ladder stored against breaker box and starter switch. Also no current inspection tag on ladders. Painters 1. Electric cord on floor coiled under safety shower/eyebath on north side. 2. Paint spray gun hoses - some had out-of-date inspection tape and some had no inspection. 3. Slings in storage cabinet at southeast wall storage - some frayed and need to be discarded. 4. Recommend installing a cover on the eyebath to keep dust and dirt out of it. Machinists Items mentioned that will be checked further by inspection team: 1. Paint the top step of ladders red to indicate it should not be used. 2. Some problems with decontamination of NSI pumps recently - have not been cleaned as well as in the past. (Discussed with Dennis Kos.) Items to be corrected: 1. The phone extension 2391 needs a new fire code sticker. 2. Two new three-step ladders on rollers - no inspection stickers. 3. Eyebath/safety shower water inlet block valve on east side by the water fountain in middle of shop south of Bridgeport mill needs to be car sealed open. 4. Some clutter and a raincoat hanging on window in storage room south of the office. 2. Hose on the northwest side needs inspection. 3. Door off electrical cabinet by south stairs. Pipefitters 1. Much trash on floor and area was very crowded. 2. Several phones need new fire code stickers. 3. Utility water hose connection not pinned on west side on store room cage wall. 4. Rags and gloves lying on pipe in rack. 5. One ground cable on west side (midway) is frayed. 6. Cigarette butts in tray of welding machine. 7. Air hose on the southeast end had the wrong tape. 8. Welding machine blocking safety shower and eyebath on the southeast end of the building. 9. Need to improve equipment highlighting. 10. Need a better organized laydown area. 11. Plastic jug in front of the elevator. Carpenters 1. No fire alarm code sticker on phone extension 3723 in foreman office. 2. Inspection tape missing on overhead air hose station on west wall. 3. Need to car seal open block valve on safety shower/eyebath station on the east side of building. 4. Need a bleed on air station by the west door. Insulators 1. Empty paint bucket and two aluminum elbows on filing cabinet. 4. Gloves stuck behind conduit breaker box on wall by air conditioner unit on outside - south side. Garage 1. Water hose at west utility station - inspection is out-of-date. 2. Roll of insulator wire hanging on steam utility station valve handle. 3. Steamerette station hose inspection out of date. (Reported last quarter.) 4. Equipment cluttered with old rags and gloves. 5. Trash on the west side - inside. 6. Need to car seal block valve on the eyebath on east side. 7. Stepladder in storage area has out-of-date tag. 8. Coffee cup over eyebath. If protection is needed, install metal cover. 9. Storage room cluttered and trash on the floor. Laborers 1. Hand tool rack looks excellent. 2. Equipment storage next to the hand tool area storage room is cluttered. 3. Wall phone in lunch room/locker room needs new fire code sticker. Instrument Shop 1. Equipment under safety shower in lab area. 2. Back room by door - sling is in questionable condition - frayed. 3. Some trash in back room. 4. Water hose and air hose connected with boss fitting at utility station outside valve shop. 5. Ladder in instrument storage room with out-of-date inspection sticker. 6. Phone extension 3180 has no fire or spill alarm sticker. 7. Several analyzers stored outside, cluttering area at Station 90 C entrance.
