Modern factory lighting practices call for high wattage gas filled lamps and these generate sur prisingly high socket temperatures.

What makes Modern Fixtures Modern ?
MODERN appearance is not enough by any means.
The inside must be modern, too.
The modern trend in fixtures.--higher wattages and better shading--was recognized by the Code in writing its new requirements that heat resisting wires snail be used in all sockets.

In 1882 Thomas A. Edison, "the father of electric light," struggled with the crude Kruesi tubes--ropewound copper rods in iron pipe--in the first low volt age "network" distribution system in history.
But although improved electrical conductors were later put into use, the first cable designed especially for the single purpose of being used in low voltage distribution systems did not make its appearance until 1933--51 years later--and that was Rockbestos Secondary Network Cable.

What gives Flexibility in
Heater Cord
He knows for example that it is possible to buy a ROCKBESTOS No. 18 16/30 heater cord, that is more flexible than some No. 18 cords with a 41/34 conductor.
Why is this true ?
The answer is that everything wound, spun or braided over the wire affects the flexibility of the nnished cord.
Eight factors are involved and stranding is only one of them. They are the sofmessof the copper, the stranding, the lay, the cotton serving, the quality ofthe rubber, the asbestos covering,the twinning and the outer braid.
Flexible, long wearing heater cord is the result of constant experimental work with each of these factors, while holding the others constant, to determine the most efficient condition of each.
We wish the solution of making a very flexible cord was simply the use of a very flexible conductor, but unfortunately it isn't.
We know of no substitute for constant experimental work, fine materials and careful supervision.

What BALANCE in
Heater Cord means
We hear a lot about balance--in golf clubs, gasoline, automobiles and whatnot. We presume balance really is necessary in these things.
We know it is necessary in heater cord, and it has taken time for us to accomplish the proper balance in heater cord.
Time to standardize on the right size of the copper strands. Time for ex periment to settle on just the right lay of the stranded conductors. Lay is the twist--it must be just right, not too tight, not too loose.
The cotton serving operation must be studied. The rubber requires much experimental work.
Then the asbestos wrapping of the rubberized wires; after that the matter of lay again as the asbestos wrapped wires are twisted together. Can't be too loose; mustn't be too tight.
And then the braid. That's all you see of heater cord. Years of exper imental work on braiding has been done by Rockbestos.
Each of the factors mentioned must be just right to produce the proper balance. Balance produces flexibility, long wear and protection.
You may be interested to know that altho the Underwriters Laboratories Inc. test calls for 1,000 test cycles--all Rockbestos Heater Cord consis tently exceeds this requirement. In a way this is a tribute to the careful experimental work we have done for years to produce a balanced heater cord.

FOR APPLIANCE MANUFACTURERS:
Appliance makers soon discovered that Rockbestos fixture wire solved a persistent trouble they were having with the connections to the top heating units of waffle irons, through the hinge section.
