Texas Brain Cancer Mortality Rates
Dear Susan:
I've enclosed additional comparisons of the Texas state and county brain cancer mortality data with the U.S. rates. The requests made in your letter of October 7 are answered here, also.
I'd like to add an observation which is brought out by the graphs included here. It appears as though there is not only an age effect in the rates as you point out, but also a temporal effect. It is particularly evident in the graphs for age groups 30-34, 45-49, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 75-84 that the county rates in the 1970's are elevated with respect to the U.S. and even the state rates. This observation is also consistent with the first two hypo theses you mentioned in your 10/7/82 letter (i.e., increased utilization of CAT scanners, or increased numbers of neurologists In the area). The temporal and age effect taken together would render the third hypothesis (presence of a general brain cancer cancinogen) unlikely unless the carcinogen has since dis appeared, leaving the young with comparable brain cancer rates.
The problem certainly is an interesting and intricate one, and is deserving of further study.
