MACHINING LESSON TWO-DEMONSTRATION 2 14. Install the pads and calipers. Verify caliper moves freely. 15. Remove corrosion from the wheel (wheel-to-rotor surface). 16. Install the wheels using the correct AccuTorque socket. 17. Check brake operation. COMMON MACHINING PRACTICES FOR ROTORS When you refinish a rotor, remove the least amount of metal possible to achieve the proper finish. Never turn the rotor on one side of the vehicle without turning the rotor on the other side. Left and right rotors should be the same thickness, generally within 0.002 inch to 0.003 inch. A disc brake rotor should have a smooth non-directional finish. A nondirectional finish on the surface.of the rotor is a crosshatched pattern that does not follow the arc of the rotor. The surface helps pad break in and reduces brake noise. COMMON MACHINING PRACTICES FOR DRUMS If one drum must be machined, the other drum on the same axle also must be machined to the same diameter so that braking will be the same at both wheels. Drum diameter should be within 0.005 inch of each other. Always use sharp cutting tools or bits and use only replacement cutting bits recommended by the equipment manufacturer. Install a vibration damper to keep the drum from chattering while being refinished. A vibration damper results in a smoother surface finish. Brake System Diagnosis and Repair September, 2005 89
