Travis, General Manager Western Department Salt Lake City, Utah APPLICATION FOR PROPERTY'APPROPRIATION LOW LEVEL EMISSION CONTROL INSTALLATIONS EL PASO PLANT NO. 567 - $521,000 An appropriation approval in principle, P-2150, in the amount of $424,000 was granted by the Board of Directors on March 28, 1972. The items con tained in that appropriation approval had been discussed with the Vice Presi dent on his visit here on March 17. Estimates had been compiled by the Engineering Department to determine the cost that would be necessary for the appropriations. Unfortunately, the matte ventilation system has been revised by Central' Engineering, and the revised system requires an expenditure of $111,000 more than the original design. This increase is because of recommendations by the Fume Recovery Depart ment. The original design would dis'charge into the up-takes and a portion into the R&R flue system. The Fume Recovery Department calculated that the system would decrease the draft to such an extent as to prohibit utilizing complete gas availability. The new design incorporates a baghouse which will filter the fume and discharge into the preheaters, as well as the same volume as present info the up-takes. Surveys by the Environmental Science section indicate that smoke around the reverb when tapping matte, contains sufficient quantities of lead that, at times, it may exceed the standards set by OSHA. The estimate on the replacement of the blast furnace baghouse stacks has been increased by $15,000 over that discussed in March. The increase is a result of a closer inspection of the stacks when measurements were taken and it was discovered that the breeching between the stacks and the baghouse is corroded to such an extent as to require changing. The breeching and the stacks will be fabricated steel which will be insulated on the outside and coated on the inside to prevent corrosion in the future.
