Krummrich plant in Sauget has made significant progress in improving the environment by sharply reducing the amount of waste it generates. We thought you might like to know that the plant has reduced air emissions of hazardous chemicals by 64 percent in just three years, and is more than two-thirds of the way toward the company's goal of reducing such emissions by 90 percent by the end of 1992. The plant has achieved such dramatic progress through strong financial commitment by Monsanto and "hands-on" involvement by the plant's 630 employees. This kit contains information on a number of waste-minimization programs at the plant, including: A $25-million investment in equipment to remove chemicals from wastewater leaving the plant. Research into the use of bacteria to remove chemicals from the plant's wastewaster in the future. A new $5 million process for making paradichlorobenzene -- the main ingredient in mothballs -- that eliminates 1 million pounds of waste annually. Also included is information on the plant's emergency response programs, its openness to the community and its involvement in a wide range of community programs.
