Attached is my letter to B. F. Goodrich's attorney and to our attorney Mr. R. L. Hollingshead, on the subject. 1 Dr. Infante or the reporter put two items separated by two years together and implied that industry withheld data from the public and governmental agencies. The first item refers to my memorandum to Dr. Demehl, , et al, dated November 23, 1971.. The discussion of publishing '-'* Dt. Viola's work in the TJ.S. relates to .the anticipated results, of , publication, not to suppressing it. Dr. Viola's paper had been , published in Cancer Research, May, 1971 and he had told Dr. Lane and others at the May 5., 1971 meeting, that he, was continuing work at lower exposure levels. The results of any further work were never available in the U.S. except word of mouth. The second item directly attributed to Union Carbide Corporation internal correspondence was drawn from my memorandum on a meeting with KIOSH, July 19, 1973 which states: "The objectives (of the NIOSH meeting) were to apprise NIOSH of vinyl chloride studies in progress and to avoid over-reaction by the Department of Labor and KIQSn should data become available from this or other sources." /% . Interestingly, the European sponsor's of Maltoni did not give MCA permission to reveal their work until the July 19, 1973 meeting with NIOSH. At the Second International Symposium on Cancer Detection and Prevention at Bologna, April 9-12, 1973, Dr. Maltoni gave a paper entitled "Occupational Carcinogenesis" which gave more data on his work than MCA had for the NlOSH meeting.
