Dear Dr. Miller* The Atlantic Refining Company has been requested by Technical Committee J of the American Society of Testing Materials to set up a minimum color standard for brown aviation fuel to identify Grade 108/135 It is our understanding that a similar sample identified as Experimental Brown III-A was submitted by the Ethyl Corporation per their letter dated March 9, 1951 This sample was composed of* Orange - 5 mg- per gallon Red - 2.25 mg. per gallon Blue - 2.6 mg. per gallon Total - 9.35 mg. dye per gallon In your reply, which was addressed to Mr. R. V.' Kerley of the Ethyl Corporation, you indicated that, while brown was a poor color, the sample submitted would appear to be distinctive enough to satisfy Regulation 9 for leaded fuels. Since you have never specified a minimum dye concentration on a gram basis-it is felt that this minimum color should be checked with you before supplying it to the industry.
