Martin Subject: Tech Center Study of Vinyl Chloride Monitoring Using 3M Badges When the 3M badges were first available on the market, we were very much interested in the prospects of their use in our routine VCM monitoring. This project was assigned to our Co-op student at the time. Our field sampling with charcoal tubes in conjunction with 3M badges showed a good correlation of VCM results although I don't believe a correlation factor was calculated. However, later that year, the report from Tech Center caused us to stop pursuing their use for our VCM monitoring for OSHA compliance. We would be very interested and supportive of further investigation on the matter as we are presently using these badges for our benzene monitoring, and are happy with their performance as well as with their acceptance by personnel who wear them. As for the REAL badges, these were also tested here, although a longer time ago in 1976. Our study indicated that they performed very well also. The cost of calibration which could only be performed by their lab was the prohibitive factor at the time. This may have changed. Again we would support a further investiga tion of possible use of this badge as well as the 3M badge and the newer Du pont badge for our VCM compliance monitoring.
