OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH STANDARDS SUBPART G - OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL
(Code of Federal Regulations, Title 29, Chapter XVII. Part 1910, 37 FR 22139 October 18. 1972. with subsequent amendments indicated where appropriate in the text.)
Subpart G Occupational Health and
Environmental Control
11910.93 .Ur contaminant*.
An employee's exposure to any mate rial lifted In table 0-1, 0-2, or 0-3 ot UUi lection thall be limited in accord ance with me requirement* of the follow ing paragraph* of mi* taction.
(a) Table 0-1: (1) Materials wiUi names preceded by "C--Ctiling Valves. An employee'i expoeure to any material In table 0-1. me name ot which It preceded by a "C" (e-f.. C Boron trlfluonde). mail at no time exceed the- celling value given tor that material in the table. (2) Other materials--l-hour time weighted averages. An employee's expo sure to any material in table 0-1. me name of which 1* not preceded by "C", in any 8-hour worX shift of a 40-hour work week, shall not exceed me 8-hour time weighted average given for that material in me table. (b) Table 0-2:
(1) t-hour time weighted averages. An employes'* exposure to any material listed in table 0-2. in any l-hour work shift of a 40-hour work week, shall not exceed the 8-hour time weighted average .limit given for mat material in me table.
(2) Acceptable ceiling concentrations.
An employee's exposure to a material listed In table 0-2 shall not exceed at any time during an l-hour shift the ac ceptable celling concentration limit given for the material in the table, except for a time period, and up to a concentration
not exceeding me maximum duration and concentration allowed In me *itmtn
under "acceptable maximum peak above the acceptable celling concentration for an 8-hour shift".
(3) Example. During an 8-hour work shift, an employee may be exposed to a concentration of Benzene above 23 ppm.
(but never above 50 ppm.) only for a maximum period of 10 minute*. Such ex posure must be compensated by expo sures to concentrations leas than 10
ppm. so that the cumulative expoaure
for me entire 8-hour work shift does not exceed a weighted average of 10 ppm.
(e) Table G-3: An employee's expo sure to any material listed In table G-3. In any l-hour work shift of a 40-hour work week, shall not exceed me l-hour time weighted average limit given for that material In me table.
(d) Computation formulae:
(1) (1) The cumulative exposure for an 8-hour work shift shall be computed as follows:
xsc.r.+cr>+ .. . c.r.
where:
8
g te the equivalent tepoeure tor Use work
ing shift.
C It the concentration during any period
of Una r wharo tba eoaeeatjauoa remains constant.
T la the duration In hours of tha axpoeur*
at the concentration C.
The value of shell not exceed me 8hour time weighted average limit In table

(e) To achieve compliance with para graph (a) through (d) of this section, administrative or engineering control* must first be determined and Imple mented whenever feasible. When such controls are not feasible to achieve full compliance, protective equipment or any other protective measures shall be used to keep the exposure of employees to air contaminants within the limits pre scribed in this section. Any equipment and/or technical measures used for this purpose must be approved for each par ticular use by a competent Industrial hygienist or other technically qualified person.
