Stout: Subject: Follow~Up Of Heating With Pittsburgh Coming Representatives On June 21, 1968 I have attached a copy of a portion of the June 1968 HIndustrial Hygiene Digest* which contains susanaries of twelve recent scientific reports on asbestos* I have also attached an unpublished article by the United States Public Health Service. As yet, I have not received the most recent unpublished paper presents in Exitope last month by Dr. W. Clark Cooper. I have discussed the University of Pittsburgh's proposed asbestos and heat stress consultation for the Port Allegany Plant with Dr. Horton Corn, Professor of Industrial Hygiene Engineering, Graduate School of Public Health of the University of Pittsburgh, who has agreed to study the asbestos exposure profcden further and rsccraaend such additional dust control measures as may be required. Since.Dr. W. Belding, the authority on heat stress, was not available for our reeting, Dr. Com will discuss our problem concerning the State of Pennsylvania and heat stress. I left the pertinent correspondence on this matter for Dr. Balding review. He will be in touch with me. I have reviewed the attached booklets which you left with me. In my opinion, neither are ^jprcpriate for our use with customers. However, with slight modification, either the HIMA pamphlet "Recommended Health Safety Practices For Handling And Applying Thermal Insulation Products Containing Asbestos** or "Asbestos - Safety And Control" could be developed for your cot^&ny's use. The evidence concerning the synergistic effects of asbestos dust exposure and cigarette smoking in the production of lung cancer warrant consideration of an educational program for our own employees working in the Unibestos operations and also the use of the pre-employment examination as a future selection procedure in not permitting cigarette smokers to work in Unibestos operations. m i ow ' DTJ?.
