The problems vary from those ao3ociated with defatting of the okir., as would occur on intimate contact with certain petroleum fractions, to those accompanying tho use of harsh abrasives and detergenta in hand cleansers. Potentially undesirable noise levels might be encountered in the vicinity of high-spoed pumps. in compressor rooms, in generator roams of the power houses, to mention only a feu.
Inadequate illumination la a problem that affeete clerical pcraonrcl as much and ea often aa proceas workers. Satisfactory illumination must bo considered in close ecnjuuction with tho Job to bo porfoimod and is u con-ssite of a number of items -- the intensity of the light, its color, contrast, amount of glare, and angle of incidence. Potential difficulties arising from inadequate illumination may bo encountered in any area of the refinery but is most likely to arinc from clerical activities.

assured that all governmental requirements arc net and exceeded and that

tion, io a very real problem. On the other hand, thir condition is being

aspoct, hao entailed a tremondous amount of offort and the ond io not in
sight. Devoloping lncldonco figuroo for tho Chemical Producto area alone
utilized all available porsonnol free tho Nodical Department of tho Jersey
Company and our own for ocveral weeks, and incidence figurn for the alcohol
plant are Just now boing completed. Tho etiologic agent is not known but
no offort io being oparod to identify it. Only after the problem hao been
voll dofinod will it bo possible to sot up an intelligent control program.

drinking water supply and the method cf bactoriologicolly checking this for

samples was changed to include carpics evory threo months from tho forerrost
ends of tho water mains in addition to collecting conplce at a point very

Uador the existing conditions, th-* procaucion3 used, and the concentrations cf oulfido thes aro now found, it is the opinion that the denger lo not only eyo irritation, but possibly chronic systemic poisoning f r a lev concentrations. The currently used euifide detector is not censitlvo enough, to pick up concentrations of there ft'-sco vhlch vzill produce physiological effects. An adoquate appraisal would depend upon using absolute quantitative chemical cotbods and integrated camples.

have been collected and chocked for mercury no far. This study io continu ing. In several locations mercury vapors have been found by atmospheric rarr>-
llcg. In some of theca locations vhore mercury is rogulerly used; a weekly
check is beingmado end a record kept by the operatine peraonnel or the
analytical laboratory at the request of tho departmental supervisor. Other
heavy metals vhich have been located and vo kr.ov present enough exposure that they should bo studied aro zinc, chromate, cadmium, and to a l c c c o r degree, beryllium. Up to the present tine no quantitative values arc avail
able on these materials.
Silica and cstectcs are both extensively ucod in the Refinery by
a limited number of employees. To date the only quantitative study we have
made dealt vith the composition of contact clay. The free Bilice contont of
these clays has been dotormined by a caroful chemical analysis acsioted by
x-ray opoctogrsph. It iB felt that a otudy on the atmospheric concentrations
on silica and silicate duct associated with rclliiing the furnaces io of
immediate importance. Silica bricks ere commonly ucod in lining the furnaces
used in the Refinery. Even vhere silicate bricks are used, it is known that
in high tomperaturoo these silicates docoupoco to form very dangerous forms
of allies, criotobslite, end tridymlte.
The exposure to nabontoo under normQl operating conditions in tho Refinery is not* oxtencivc "but frequently it io necessary fer an insulator to
do work inside of e closed apace with limited ventilation, nnkinc It roorib.'o
that a high concentration of asbeatoc dust may be engendered. Also,the

tion in view of the fact that the Public Health Service has on record an
analysis of a similar type clay which they claim to have contained 20 free

At the Acid Plent and at the SOp Plants/ low concentrations of sul
fur dioxido and trioxidor are potential problems. Many coupleintc havt> b?cn

tions, the current situation io much improved. The proof of those improve
ments was recently brought to our attention when it was reported that emplcyoec

aolved;but much money for tho jxirpooo of improving this area has boon spent
and even moro- Hno been requected.

Refinery. This problem is being currently studied in detail with the
assistance of the safety engineers. This study will include not only the
Refinery and the Specialty Plant, but also the Production Department err!
Rumble Pipe Line Company's operations. Varcol was found being used freely without regard to tho i y aro
matics it contains.
*In a few units heat, which has been the cause of various fatigue
caaes as well as the source of many complaints, was obotrved. Tics* hoc not
permitted any detailed study of the problems associated with heat anti noio",
but it is felt that it is important enough that such e study is Justified.
In most casec, these studies have been carried out by the cperr.tlng
personnel in charge cf the various departments with the assistance of the
laboratories which are avcileble tc then. The tedlcul Division has servod a r> consultant on making available approved typo analytical methods to be uced ir
atmospheric tecting, analyeis of urine ccmples, and to interpret the results
that the analyst reports. In some departments the supervisor hes net felt
that they had qualified personnel, supplios, equipment, cr the time to mnk**
these indicated surveys. In there cases, when possible, the Industrial EypdenJr
has carried cut the chemical and engineering serviceo. In some instar.cer th"
equipment and time were not available to the Industrial Hygienist and he hnn
turned to the industrial hygiene services of the Texas Stste Department of
Health for assistance cn a quantitative apprcical of the toxic materials known
to be present in the atmosphere. These public officials have teen very co
operative Id every voy in trying to further the general well-being of 1-ho
Humble employees.
