r FORMALDEHYDE The Springfield Plant began producing formaldehyde in 1948. Formaldehyde is an important raw material in the production of melamine and urea and phenolic resins at Springfield. Formaldehyde is a gas but is normally sold as an aqueous solution called Formalin. It is an irritant to the nose and eyes and can be detected at very low levels (1 ppm or less), which provides significant protection against ex cessive exposure. Its uses include urea and melamine resins; phenolic resins which are used in automotive paints and resins; fertilizer, dyes, preservatives and disinfectants; r embalming fluids; durable press treatment of textile fibers.
