A number of friends of The Saranac Laboratory have already inquired of me whether this development might possibly have an adverse effect on the scientific work of the Saranac Laboratory. Their concern stems from the fact that both The Saranac Laboratory and Trudeau Sanatorium were founded by the late Edward Livingston Trudeau and, since the two institutions have been rather doseiy assotiated for a Ions time, many persons are not aware that The Saranac Laboratory and the Sanatorium are separate-structures. Please be assured that the cinsir.g of the Sanatorium will not impede the work of The Saranac Laboratory or interfere with the program of research studies that- are being conducted. On the contrary the Board of Trustees, when announcing its de* asion to dose the Sanatorium, emphasized in determination to apply all its resources to the further prosecution of research. Having affirmed in this dramatic fashion its faith in the ultimate victory of science over tuberculosis, the Board has simultaneously under taken to partidpate vigorously -in the assault on other opponents of health, particularly those fostered by industrial environmental factors. For the past 25 years The Saranac Laboratory has been steadily transferring its emphasis from pre-occupation with the problems of tuberculosis to research on occupa tional disease, on cancer, and on industrial hygiene. These subjects are ^ttwtiVhh-1 not only in their broadest connotation but also in specific applications as wdL The objec tives of The Saranac Laboratory are research, consultation, and education, and the ter mination of the service of taking care of patients at Trudeau Sanatorium does not in any way detract from the prosecution or those objectives by The Saranac Laboratory.
