The following report -rover* the highlights of Association activities for tha third quarter of 1963. More detailed Information on these activ ities or other* not enumerated vlll he supplied on request. Bo attempt has been nade to cover routine activities, and research is covered In a

GENERAL
1. AMC. The annual meeting of the American Mining Congress vas attended In Los Angeles.
2. Information Bulletins. Coe of these Bulletins vas sent to members during the quarter.
3- Office Space. VIth the approval of the Ixecutlve Cocaltteea of both L.I.A. and American Zinc Institute arrangements vere cade vith ovx present office building for additional 6pace. The entire lth floor vlll soon be occupied by International Lead-Zinc Research Organisation. L.I.A. and A.Z.I. vlll continue on the present larger lUth floor hut vlll occupy the entire area. Past growth of all three groups and pos sible future expansion entered Into the decision.
HEALTH ACT SAFETY
I>. Meetings Attendedi Air Pollution Control Association, Vest Coast Section - Third Technical Meeting and
California Motor Vehicle Pollution Control Board
$. Seton Hall College of Medicine. The Health and Safety Director addressed third year medical students of this school at one of their regular clinical conferences at which the subject of lead toxicology vas discussed and illustrated vith a recent Industrial case.
6. Stanford Research Institute Study, ILCTO Project LC-69. At a sicetlng at Stanford, representatives of Ethyl, Dupont, Amerlcsn Petroleum Institute, California Health Department and ourselves discussed progress to date 00 this project In vhlch atmospheric samples analysed for lead have he so collected. The project la now In its final phases and enalyaes of the results of air sampling In Los Angeles nnd Son Francisco are being collated and made ready for the final report, which is due In November of this year. Possibilities for further vork on the project vere dis cussed and a general oucosry of results to date was made.

7. Vlelt to Detroit Automobile Plants. A presentation vas made of the results obtained on vater thlnnnble paints on ILZRO Project Ho. LC-34 to General Rotors, Ford, Chrysler, and American Rotors. The Health and Safety Director attended each presentation to ensver questions and en gage In a discussion concerning problems cf lead toxicology vhlch are likely to arise In any expanded use of lead as a pigment for sheet octal primers.
ft. Rational Bureau of Standards' Washington Laboratories. A visit vas oade to the offices of Dr. John Taylor of the Chemical Analytical Section of the Bureau of Standards for the purposes of acquainting our selves vith the latest techniques In fine particle analyses. The Bureau shoved great interest In our Stanford Research Institute project since this project Is engaged In vork vhlch has not yet been covered by the Bureaus' activities. Dr. Taylor Indicated to us that should the occasion arise ve can be assured of their cooperation in our future Investigations.

9. "Lead." The second 1963 Issue of this publication vas prepared and vas called In July.
10. Advertising. One ad each on porcelain enamelled aluminum appeared In "Machine Design" and "rroduct Engineering." Tvo ads appeared In "Materials In Design Engineering," one on the same subject and one on terns piste. A page ad vas placed In the special Lead-Zinc Issue of "American Metal Market."
11. Inquiries. In the first nine months of 19^3 the L.I.A. office has processed nearly 9,000 Inquiries, of vhlch over 2,500 cane from space advertising, over 2,000 froa press releases, over 1,600 free "Lead," nearly 1,000 by telephone, and the re6t froa miscellaneous sources. Kcsrly 1,300 of these vere of a technical nature and vere handled by other than routine methods, such as special correspondence, personal or telephone calls. Altogether nearly 43,000 pieces of L.I.A. literature have been distributed so far this year by other than bulk Ballings.
INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT - NOISE AM) VIBRATION
12. Sound Proof Ro o d . The polygraph roca at the Bergen County, H. J.,Prosecutor's Office, the lead sound-proofing of vhlch vas mentioned In an earlier report, vas Instrument tested end found to give excellent results. Also the Prosecutor has expressed complete satisfaction. A detailed report of this Installation, vhlch employed a little less than one ton of 4-lb. sheet lead Is being prepared for members.
13. Advertising. An ad on the use of sheet lead to reduce trans former noise appeared in "Electrical World" during the quarter.
14. Meeting. Another meeting of the I.D.C. aubccttmlttea concerned vith thi^ subject vas held.

15. Research Report. A draft of a progress report giving research results to date on lead to reduce transmission of noise was submitted at this meeting, discussed, and a final draft, for limited distribution Is nov about completed.
16. Article. A large amount of available data on the use of lead to control noise la houses vaa provided "Sunset" magazine, at the request of the editors, for use In an article to appear In the October Issue.

17. Industrial Rolse. As a result of reading L.I.A. advertising end publications over a period of time, officials of the General Electric Co. asked us to send an engineer to their Bridgeport plant to investigate whether lead slight be the answer to several sound control problems In volving noisy machinery. Recommendations were cole which would Involve the use of about a too of lead In the form of sheet and leaded plastics.
lS. Hovablc Partitions. Through an acoustical consultant with whom L.I.A. has worked In the past, a vice president of Virginia Metal Products Co. called to request a conference to explore the possibilities of lead to reduce sound transmission In their movable partitions. This company claims to be the second largest manufacturer of these partitions In the U.S. A conference vaa held, attended by the Company and representa tives of L.I.A. and I.L.Z.R.O. and a further meeting vlli be held to arrive at procedural details. -1
19. Sound Proof Fins. As a result of work previously done by L.I.A. with the architects, thin gypsum board fine with lead laminatlcns Inside 18 In. wide have been Installed to Join the hJ in. regular parti tions with the narrow culliona 00 the outside wall of a new hotel In Hartford, Conn., since the culllan3 were too narrow to accomodate the regular partitions. By this method it Is expected that the some sound transmission loss will be achieved using half the thickness.
20. Inquiries. As a result of ad on sound-reducing transformer housings in Electrical World" and an article on the same subject In "Lead" nearly 100 Inquiries have already been received asking for more Information, mostly from Important utility companies. A list of these names waa prepared and la being sent to members for personal follow-up by salesmen or engineers vhere possible.

21. Annual Plumbers' Apprentice Contest. L.I.A. again supplied lead materials, prizes and a Judge for this annual contest held at Purdue University end an Instructor for the teachers' training program held in conjunction with It.
22. Advertising. One ad on lead pool linings appeared in "Engineer ing Hews Record" and also In "Progressive Architecture" during the quarter. An ad on lead roofing appeared In "Roofing, Siding, Insulation."

23- Solder. A chapter on solder and soldering methods vas pre pared for~tEe-Penton Publishing Co. and appeared In the "Eonferrou* Metals Book" Issue of "Machine Design," Sept. 19, 19^3*
2k. More on Solder. Die L. I.A. secretary vas ageln appointed chairman of the coanlttee to edit the solder chapter of the American Welding Society's "Welding Handbook" for Its Fifth Edition. He vas chairman of the original cocnlttee some years ago.
25. World's Fair Pool. Considerable time vas spent vlth the archi tects for the Hall of Science at the Kev fork World's Fair vlth the result that 35 tons of lead lining Is nov specified for a large reflect ing pool at this building.
26. Terne Plate. As a result of our cooperation vlth U. 3. Steel on promotion of terne plate vhich began vlth their talk on the subject at the L.l.A. Annual Meeting, ve have devoted a couple of our ad* to terne plate and the Steel Corporation Is preparing a booklet on terns plate to be used In aasverlng the many Inquiries received. The booklet should be ready next month.
INDUSTRY reVELOPMEOT - CERAMICS
27. Advertising. Tvo ads on leaded porcelain enamels on a variety of metals appeared In 'American Ceramic Society Bulletin" and "Ceramic Industry" and one In "Ceramic Age" during the quarter. Tvo ads on leaded porcelain enameled aluminum also appeared In "Metal Products Manufacturing."
28. Supplement. A nev 2-page supplement to "Lead In the Ceramic Industries" has been prepared based on vork done under a research fellow ship supported by I.L.Z.R.O. at Penn State. It haa been submitted to the American Ceramic Society for epp.-oval, since It vas based cn a paper pre sented before that Society.
29. Meetings. The annual fall meetings of the Ceranlc-Metal Systems, the Materials and Equipment, and the White Wares Divisions of the American Ceramic Society vere attended.
DTOUSTHY DEVELOPMENT - BATTERIES
30. Advertising. One ad on motive pever batteries appeared In "Business Week," one In "Materials Handling Qiglneerlng" and tvo In "Factory" during the quarter.
31. Survey. To help In handling Inquiries a survey of battery man ufacturers vas mode and the names of companies, types and sites of batteries cads and other information have been tabulated.
