MANAGER March 25, 1976 SS "EXXON GETTYSBURG" Shipyard Period Master and Chief Engineer SS "EXXON GETTYSBURG" c/o Office Gentlemen: The EXXON GETTYSBURG is scheduled to enter Newport News Shipyard on or about April 24-26, 1976. The U. S. Coast Guard Biennial Inspection, tailshaft, drydocking and miscellaneous other repairs and betterments will be accomplished at this time. We are attaching a copy of the Specifications describing the work which we plan to do. Please review these specifications, which you should be familiar with, and promptly advise us of any omissions of necessary repair work. We suggest that you conduct the Coast Guard Inspection without any unnecessary delays. Out primary objective is to maintain the EXXON GETTYSBURG in operational readiness while giving due consideration to minimizing the cost of the repairs and the out-of-service time incurred. This objective can be achieved with the mutual cooperation of the ship's officers and the Repair Inspector in attendance. We have evaluated the repair specifications for the forthcoming yard period, and it is expected to take not more than twenty-five to twenty-eight (25 - 28) days to complete the work. As in the past, extra items should be mini mized and should be submitted only through the Repair Inspector. To achieve a smooth work flow and to minimize time in the yard, you are requested to do your utmost to support and aid the Repair Inspector in making inspections of repairs to cargo piping and valves, boilers, pumps, engine room valves, etc.; and, near the end of the repair period in expediting plant startup and other necessary preparations for getting underway. This assistance on your part will free the Repair Inspector to provide overall coordination of the repair effort and liaison with the yard. When we receive your letters concerning crew retention and work to be accomplished, we will review it for cost justification and will advise you as soon as possible of the level of shipyard manning. Because of the expected length of the repair period, some reduction in the requested number of personnel is probable. During the course of the overhaul, you are to maintain a detailed list of work actually accomplished by vessel personnel.
