Hr. East 122nd Street, New York City, called today to request a IeUefflraHB stating that gasoline supplied by Colonial Beacon Oil
Company contains lead. lie is trying to prove his past illness was an occupational disease so he can collect workman's compensation. Me have briefly discussed this case with Hr. Locker and Dr. Beyer over the phone.
His story is as follows: He was working for Riverdale Garage, 230th Street H Riverdale Avenue, Bronx, Hew York, when he slipped and fell into gasoline on the
floor. This incident occurred on October 10th, 19ho> and he became ill within about
ten minutes after his fall. He was eating a sandwich at the tine aria although he wil not make a positive claim that the sandwich got in the gasoline and he ate it, he thinks it possible and claims Dr. 3. J. Sanger of the Presbyterian.- Hospital, H. Y. C. diagnosed his illness as lead, poisoning. At the time of the accident he says t;i* water was reported to be polluted and warning had been issued that it should be bo He before using.
His personal physician on the case from the start was Dr. I. J. Lstrin, 31-35 Lie Kalb Avenue, Bronx, N. x. Several days after the accident he developed jaundice and his doctor sent him to the Presbyterian Hospital. X-rays were taken and Dr. Hanger, a specialist at the rospital* was consulted. He claims that some uoetor(or doctors) from the Hayo Clinic also examined him.
Hr. 4HVm^claims that the referee hearing the case has told him that he cannot award compensation on the basis of an occupational disease unless he has a jrittenjstat erne at supporting his claim that there was lead in the gasoline. Hr.
IBUlMBHi'calied on Colonial Beacon for such a letter. They' referred him to Stancard
Oil at 26 Broadway, who in turn sent him to us.
The case is workman's Compensation No. 1x7002602. The Zurich Insurance Compare who are also involved, examined Lir. tfflHflflfe'eb. $, 19h7 He could threw no light on the results of their examination
He trust that this information is complete enough to enable you to follow it to
a satisfactory conclusion. He advised Lir.
that he would pros, ably har from
us through his physician.

Dear 5.111:
Thanks Tor the information In your letter of March 5 concerning the alleged case of lead poisoning reported "by Mr. Baldwin. Unless I hear from you to the contrary later, I should assume that you are following through on .this in every way. Do not hesitate to call on me for anything I can do, since you realize that these cases often have ramifications of considerable conse quence . In view of Mr. Webb's mandate to me I must still regard myself as, prim&t-ily responsible in all these medico-legal matters. Nevertheless, I have no intention^of interfering in the regional handling 'of them until ana unless*there Is something useful that I can do.
Ollle Jones has forwarded information to me and a copy to you,
concerning an additional case being handled by Pennsylvania
ThresherijtenanijZnrg^sDMutml Casualty Insurance Company, Claim

above insurance company in order to establish contact. If any
information on this case comes your way, or If the opportunity
presents itself to you to deal with this matter directly, do so

Dautrebande was out here last week, and we arranged with him so as. to enable him to work somewhat briefly on some acute experiments.
Unfortunately his needs for the conduct of the chronic work very much exceed our available facilities at the present. I shall do
everything for him I can, and will be delighted to have him, but It is a somewhat difficult situation In view of our present procram.
Sincerely yours.
