At the urging of The Environmental Protection Agency, Public Service Company this afternoon began removing soli from an area which may be contaminated with the dangerous chemical PCB. Paula Woodward has the story." REPORTER PAULA WOODWARD: "They've been using PCB in elec trical transformers and capacitors for 30 years in Colorado, and storing leaking PCB capacitors In the Boulder area on this patch of ground for at least six years." . DON MAY OF PUBLIC SERVICE COMPANY: "We first thought of It as a result of an employees' safety meeting we had. And we were discussing PCB in the meeting, and one of our employees got to thinking that some of our equipment is stored out here, is leaking, and some of it, possibly, does have some PCB in it." REPORTER PAULA WOODWARD: "But there was also an anonymous phone call to the State Health Department about the suspect PCB, which speeded up today's action. Public Service Company sent a sample of soil in for testing this morning. Even though those results won't be back for a few weeks. Public Service says they're treating the situation as though PCB is here in the soil." DON MAY OF PUBLIC SERVICE COMPANY: "The crews are to wear boots and gloves, and these boots and gloves after they are through will have to be cleaned with solvent and the rags used to clean these are then put in the barrels and they are also shipped down to Denver for proper disposal there." REPORTER PAULA WOODWARD: "But if PCB is here, then these safety precautions won't help. PCB is supposedly highly toxic if it is swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Boots and gloves are probably only a minor precaution against it. The drums with soil will be shipped to Denver, and then to Idaho for storage in a chemical dump.
