C. 20207 Dear Sirs In reply to your letter dated August 12,1977, I wish to make clear some observations which as a Manufacturer the problem that I and others might occur if and when this law is passed One thing that comes to my mind immediately would be raw materials which would be used as a substitute for asbestos. It is my understanding that there are very limited source of supply and as an individual like myself have no knowledge of who does control this source* It is known that some other products is controlled by certain large companies or company which have already advised their product will not be available to any new customers and in only limited amounts to others 3h banning asbestos from the formulation of tape joint compound which only limited use of this material is used in the manufacturing process, I can make only one observation, there are too few people which are deciding the fate of a major building material with questionable results There are too few people with questionable information regulating the lives and the business of the American people Before making a decision affecting so many people, certainly there should be more time given so that the majority of people involved could express their opinion* It was brought to my attention by your survey team that the joint cement manufactured by a few of the larger companies was in fact superior to joint cement manufactured with asbestos. For your information and guidance hereon, this material manufactured without asbestos is not superior or is it even equal Furthermore the raw material that we will have to use to replace asbestos has not been approved Since this type of raw material is of a fibrous nature, this product might be banned so where do we go from here* 7^
