OC-42-2 INTRA-COMPANY CORRESPONDENCE To From Subject J. M. Westlake - Granville Dot* July 31, 1962 H. V.; Smith - Toledo TEST METHOD--KAYLO DUST R. C. Amos - Berlin J. Boynton - New York 0. W. Pfeiffer - Toledo { R. E. Rockwell - Toledo W. K. Sidwell - Toledo F. C. Wilson - Granville In the search for Kaylo formulations to secure improved resistance to breakage, we have found that we adversely affected the product from a fabri cating and dust standpoint. As you knew, we currently have no specification or test method for dustiness. It has been agreed that we need both. Will you please undertake the development of a test method for determining Kaylo dust immediately. The following suggestions are made for your con sideration and guidance. 1. Use equipment similar to that used for dust measurement on AF Equipment and Appliance products. 2. Collect the dust from a freshly sawed surface of specified area. Tka type saw (J. Boynton, please advise Westlake as to type saw used in field) to be used should also be specified, since it will affect the dust generated. It may be desirable to remove the dust from both of the cut surfaces. 3. Specify conditioning of samples prior to test since par cent moisture retained will affect dust generated. 4. When you have tentative test method established, arrange for Berlin plant to accumulate test data and related samples so that Boynton can review visual appearance of samples as related to test results and help us establish a "dust" spec. 5. Based on results of use of tentative test method in the plant, recommend final test method, specification values and tolerances, Please advise, by August 6, your schedule for completing this work. m/djs H.
