The expo su re to high concentrations o f a sb e sto s dust over long p e rio d s of tim e can c a u se a se r io u s r e s p ir a to r y condition known a s " a s b e s t o s i s ,11 E very effort m u st be taken to protect em ployes from over-exposu re to asb estos dust including, but not lim ited to, the following: 1, L o cal exhaust ventilation sh all be utilized, where feasib le, when using hand or pow er-operated tools which m ay produce or re le a se asb estos fibers. 2. In sofar a s p o ssib le , a sb e sto s m a te ria ls sh all be handled, mixed, applied, rem oved, cut o r otherw ise w orked in a wet state sufficien t to prevent the e m issio n of a ir borne p a rtic le s, u n less the u sefu ln ess of the product would be dim inished thereby. C are m ust be taken-to prevent unnecessary, generation of dust. 3. Em ployes engaged in the dem olition o r rem oval of asb esto s covered pipes or stru ctu res o r a sb e sto s insulation sh all w ear the approved supplied air re sp irato ry co v eralls, head coverings, gloves and foot coverings provided, 4. Contaminated cov eralls, head coverings and gloves shall be stored in lo ck ers or containers sep arated from the dem olition em ploye's street clothing, 5. F o o t coverings sh all be worn by lu g g ers perform ing dem olition and discarded in the cov ered con tain ers provided for a sb e sto s sc ra p at the end of the shift. 6, D aggers sh all observe good housekeeping practices at a ll tim es, 7. Caution sign s sh all be placed at each location where asb esto s m aterials a re being rem oved or dem olished and in a ll shops in which asbestos m a te ria ls a re being worked. A sb esto s sc ra p m aterial and dust sh all be discarded only in the covered containers provided. These containers -are-lined with polyethylene bags. When fu ll, these b ag s w ill be sealed, labeled and disposed of by the maintenance employe assigned to the area. 9. The la b e ls to be u se d on a sb e sto s sc ra p m a te ria ls, products in transport and. dust b ear the following legend; CAUTION: Contains A sbestos F ib ers - Avoid Creating Dust Breathing A sbestos Dust May Cause Serious Bodily Harm 10. A sb esto s sc ra p m aterial and dusts shall be removed by the u se of toxic dust vacuum clean ers only; No broom sweeping or air hosing will be allowed. 11.' M onitoring is p erform ed by Safety and Environm ental Control in accordance with requirem ents of Reference (a)r. 12. M edical examinations a re perform ed by the M edical Department in accordance with R eference {aU 13. M edical and environmental monitoring records are kept as required by Reference (a). 14. Personnel working in the vicinity of pipe lagger& using asb esto s shall w ear re sp irato ry equipment when required by Reference (a).
