I was also wondering if you would have any interest in potentially addressing the 2017 Great Lakes Environmental Summit briefly in your new capacity in a couple of weeks (Feb. 8)? I know this is sort notice and understand if you're not able to, but thought it couldn 't hurt to extend the invitation. Additionally, if there is someone else within the Administration that you feel would like to participate in the Summit, please let me know or feel free to pass this invitation along to them. And if you are not able to speak at the Summit, you are of course are welcome to attend the Summit as an audience member. Please just let me know if that's the case. Below you will find more details about the Summit. Thanks, Matt I am writing to invite you to participate in and speak at the Northeast-Midwest Institute's (NEMWI) annual Great Lakes Environmental Summit, which will take place on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, from 9am - 1pm in the Congressional Visitor's Center room SVC 203-02. The summit provides Great Lakes regional stakeholders an in-person opportunity to learn about upcoming federal legislative opportunities straight from Senate and Congressional Great Lakes delegation members and Committee staff, and for those delegation members and staff to learn about regional priorities and perceived opportunities directly from Great Lakes practitioners. It is also a chance for the two groups to discuss with each other federal opportunities to further Great Lakes priorities as a federal-regional team. The group of stakeholders that will be in attendance include federal officials from the region, environmental NGOs, local governments representatives, business groups and other organizations that are helping protect our freshwater resources in the Midwest and Northeast. Additionally, key topics and themes that will be discussed during the summit include: Restoring and preserving the health of Great Lakes through federal programs like the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI); Preventing the spread of invasive species (i.e. Asian carp and zebra mussels) to and from the Great Lakes; Reducing the growth of harmful algal blooms (HAB); Investing in new wastewater and drinking water infrastructure to improve both ecological and public health in the region; and Protecting water quality from pollution through the Clean Water Act. While we are currently working out the structure of next year's summit, it typically kicks off with remarks by Members of the Congressional and Senate Great Lakes Task Forces, followed by brief legislative updates from Congressional Committee staff. This year, we are also looking to have speakers from the incoming Administration come and participate in the summit to provide insights into future executive actions that might impact the health of the Great Lakes. I have sent invitations to staff from numerous Congressional Committees including the House Agriculture Committee; the House and Senate Appropriations Committees; the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee; the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee; the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee; and the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
