ACUTE TO XIC ITY TO AQUATIC INVERTEBRATES (DAPHNIA MAGNA)
TEST SUBSTANCE_______________________________________________
Identity: A mixture containing perfluorooctanesulfonate, which may also be referred to as PFOS, FC-95, or as a component of FC-603F. (1Octanesulfonic acid) (CAS # 2795-39-3).
Rem arks: The 3M production lot number was 501. The test sample is FC603F. Current information indicates it is a mixture of 0.5% PFOS, 7% diethylene glycol butyl ether, 82.95% water, 2% acrylic foamer, 4% Alkylether sulfate, 1.45% Xanthan gum, 1.4% calcium acetate, 0.07% N-(3Chloroallyl)hexaminium chloride, 0.5% triethanolamine, 0.05% sodium hydroxide, 0.03% cis-1 -(3-Chloroallyl)-3,5,7-triaza-1 -azoniaadamantane chloride, and 0.05% tolytriazole.
The following summary applies to a mixture with incompletely characterized concentrations o f impurities. Data may not accurately reflect the toxicity o f the fluorochemical component o f the test sample.

M ethod: OECD Guideline 202. Type: Acute static GLP: No Y ear com pleted: 1994 Species: Daphnia magna S u p p lie r In-house cultures. Originally obtained from U.S. EPA-NETAC, Duluth, MN. A nalytical m onitoring: Temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen. Exposure period: 48-hours Test organism age: <24 hours old S tatistical m ethods: Not applicable. T est conditions:
Dilution w ater: Carbon-filtered well water (3M Well #2, St. Paul, MN). Dilution w ater chem istry: Not given.
Lighting: Not given. Stock and test solution preparation: A primary stock solution of 2000 mg/L was prepared, diluted to 200 mL and divided into 4 -5 0 mL replicates. Aliquots of the primary stock solution were used to prepare the remaining concentrations. Exposure vessels: 100 mL vessels containing 50 mL exposure solution. Num ber o f replicates: 4 Num ber o f daphnids per replicate: 5 Num ber o f concentrations: five plus a blank control W ater chem istry during the study:
002459
pH range (0-48 hours): 8.4 - 8.4 (control exposure) 8.4 - 8.4 (1000 mg/L exposure)
Tem perature range (0-48 hours): 20 - 22 C Dissolved oxygen range (0-48 hours):
8.3 - 8.3 mg/L (control exposure) 6.4 - 8.3 mg/L (1000 mg/L exposure)
RESULTS _________ ___________________________________________
Nom inal concentrations: Blank control, 100,180, 320, 560, and 1000 mg/L.
Elem ent values: 48-hour EC50 = >1000 mg/L
Element values based on nominal concentrations.
Rem arks: Testing was conducted on a mixture as described in the Test Substance Remarks field. The values reported apply to that mixture and not the fluorochemical proportion alone.
C O N C L U S IO N S ___________________________________________________
The FC-603F 48-hour EC50 was determined to be >1000 mg/L, the highest concentration tested. No mortality or sublethal effects were observed.
Subm itter: 3M Company, Environmental Laboratory, P.O. Box 33331, St. Paul, Minnesota, 55133
DATA QUALITY___________________________________________________
Reliability: Klimisch ranking = 2. This study meets the criteria for quality testing. However, sample purity was not properly characterized and the study lacks analytical confirmation of the amount of fluorochemical proportion in the solution.
