I am enclosing herewith what may be a matter of some interest to you as follows. A copy of our examination blanks which are being used in the course of our Investigation; a report of what we have done thus far and what we are planning to do and a schedule of the places which we expect to visit with the approximate dates at which the work will be done. You will note at once that the medical examinations, not to speak of th analytical work, will cover some what more time than we had at fi^sb anticipated# There are two reasons for this. In the first place the investigation is covering a larger number of men than we had at first planned, because it seems highly advisable to Incide a considerably larger number of service station men that we had expected. In the second place we have been making it a point to study carefully the conditions which exist in various parts of the country and pick out groups of cases which represent the worst and longest exposures of different types, as well as scientifically proper control groups* Furthermore we are collecting as much of the evidence lu quantative form as it Is possible to do and I hope through my connections here at the University to be able to subject this m a s h of date to statistical analysis performed by a professional, cold blooded statistician. How the analytical work covering the specimens which are being ob tained on these men is being carried out at the maximum rate of speed for the facilities In hand* The laboratory can analyze about forty samples of urine per week, or % somewhat smaller fecal speci men* A little calculation here will4herve to show you that we can not possibly complete the investigation by the middle of January# In fact the analytical work on the urine alone will occupy us through the laifcer part of January, and It will require approximately two months More to finish the analytical xvork on the faeces. A final rport can not be made therefore until the middle or the latter part of March', When this report is in, however, we will have definite Information of a proper and more wide spread sort than has been ob tained before* What I expect to do in this situation is to push the work on theanalysis of the urine as rapid as possible, and we are carrying out she medical examination with the idea of never al\u lowing the laboratory to lack specimens of urine for analysis* Undpubtedly the moat valuable evidence so far as the subject of secre tion is concerned will be obtained from the analytical results of the urine# I personally regard the analysis of the stools as almost 0001342 Mr# E# W, Webb# December 10,1926. valueless. This will make it possible I think, for us to make a tentative report of the probable conclusions of the entire study by the middle or the latter part of January* and although I shall not be able to state at that time the full conclusions of our1 Investigation it will be possible to state them with sufficient ac curacy, I think, to justify an opinion as to the.entire results# 4 ' ' There is only one way in which we could in the future turn out j these results at a mere rapid rate than we are doing this year#, ' That would call for the en&argjuenfc of our facilities for analytical ' work as regards space# Xn so far as this year*S results are con*, corned even more space would be of no advantage.because of the dif ficulty in obtaining proper assistance in doing our analytical work# and I have no desire to sacrifice anything in accuracy for the sake of spped. At a proper time, however, I am going to make a recommen dation to you.with regard to our facilities In space# .First# for the reason that I wish to make this investigation as rapidly as it can be made, and secondly* because I do not wish to Interfere too much, with our general experimental work In order to carry out this annual, investigation* However* that is a matter for our discussion# I merely xaention it at this time because X h&v an idea which has been revolving*for some.time in :ny mind concerning the future of this laboratory.#.
