Mo. 236 - 1947 June 26 "TITANIUM" BARGE LAUNCHED A new Company-owned 265-foot steel barge, to be used by the Titanium Division's Sayreville plant for waste acid disposal at sea, was launched June 20 at the yards of the Shipbuilding Division of Bethlehem Steel Co., Mariners Harbor, Staten Island, N. Y. The vessel was christened the "Sayreville" by Alma Counterman, technician at the Titanium Sayreville laboratory. On the platform with Miss Counterman were Board Chairman F. W. Rockwell and President J. A. Martino. Said to be the largest and most complex craft of its class, the "Sayreville" will go into commission some time this fall, after installation of special equipment. Following the launching, a luncheon was given at the Richmond Country Club. In attendance were Company executives, members of the Titanium Division staff, public officials, representatives of Bethlehem Steel, and newsmen. At a meeting preceding the luncheon, Mr. Martino and C. F. Garesche, head of the Titanium Division, spoke on various aspects of the waste disposal problem and the methods taken to solve it. HEADQUARTERS GROUP INSPECTS NEW LEWIS UNITS A party of New York office executives, headed by President J. A. Martino visited the John T. Lewis plant and offices in Philadelphia last Thursday. The group, which also included Messrs; Wildner, Reid, McCarthy, Stewart, Shirley and Coale, inspected the new oil refinery and the unit constructed for the manufacture of 45X pigment. John Reque of the Chicago Branch and Karel Vettewinkel of the New York office joined the party in Philadelphia for.the inspection trip. REEVES HONORED ON 40TH SERVICE ANNIVERSARY S. French Reeves, vice president and treasurer of John T. Lewis & Bros. Co., completed 40 years of service with the Company on June 17. At an anniversary luncheon tendered Mr. Reeves on June 19, and at which the New York inspection party was in attendance, he received his 40-year service emblem from J. W. Gardiner Jr., Lewis president, and gifts from associates. Mr. Reeves joined Lewis in 1907 as statistician. He advanced to purchasing agent, then comptroller and in 1929 was made treasurer of the Branch. Election to the vice-presidency followed in 1935- Mr. Reeves was named -vice president and treasurer last year. TITANIUM RESEARCH LABORATORY NOTES Dr. Roy Dahlstrom, research director of the Titanium Division, has been elected councilor to the North Jersey section of the American Chemical Society. Dr. S.S. Cole is chairman-elect_of the New Brunswick group. William F. Sullivan of the Titanium research division recently addressed the technical staff of the Squier Signal Laboratory, Fort Monmouth, N. J. Howard Ellis has been placed in charge of sales of the new Dutch Boy House Paint line at Chicago Branch. He has handled the sales of dry pigments at- Chicago for the past five years. Co. tendered itB fourth annual dinner party on June 10 to members of the Lewis quarter-century-of~service group. Following the dinner, the nearly one hundred guests attended the Phillies-Cards night ball game at Shibe Park. CHECKLEY, LINED PRODUCTS SALES HEAD, PASSES George H. Check!ey, sales manager of the lead-lined products department of Atlantic Branch, died June 1 at the age of 61. Mr. Checkley had served in the lead-lined products department for a number of years in various capacities before being made sales manager in 1938. He is survived by his widow and two daughters. BENJAMIN OF ST. LOUIS BRANCH, DIES AT 60 Roscoe P. Benjamin, sales representative of St. Loui3 Branch, died suddenly on May 31 while on vacation at Deer River, Minn. He joined the Company in 1930 after having served as an instructor in painting at the Dunwoodie Institute in Minneapolis. Surviving are Mrs. Benjamin, a son and a daughter. DEATH CLAIMS MARKILLIE, RETIRED METAL MAN Thomas H. Markillie, retired former sales manager of blue lead specialties of Atlantic Branch and prior to that job, sales director of United Lead, died May 25 at St. Petersburg, Fla. He was 69.
