PAPERS . _ O ffic e : (919) 549-8411. e x t. 3201 Analysis o f representative samples o f sp ack lin g, patching, and taping compounds by grantees o f HEW's National In s titu te o f Environmental Health Sciences* has shown th a t some contain asbestos minerals as well as other p o te n tia lly harmful su b sta n ce s._ Measurements suggest that home repair or construction work involving use o f such m aterials may re su lt in exposure to dust a t concentrations s u ffic ie n t to produce d ise a se .** Workers exposed to asbestos have been shown to face a g reatly increased risk o f developing lung cancer, mesothelioma (a rare form o f cancer), cancers o f the g astro in testin al t r a c t , and asbestosis (a scarring o f the lu n gs). These e ffe c ts generally do not show up u n til two or three--and sometimes even f o u r decades a fte r the f i r s t exposure to asbestos. R ecently, Drs. A .N . Rohl, A.M. Langer, I . J . S e lik o f f , and W .J. Spackling and drywall taping compounds co n sist o f fin ely-grain ed white powder or premixed pastes. Although P iaster o f Paris is supposedly the major constituent, other light-colored materials including clay s, micas, quartz, ta lc , and ground limestone supplement or replace the p laster in many form ulations. A d d itio n a lly , ch ryso tile asbestos is added to some products, apparently because these minute fib e rs a c t as reinforcing agents. Analysis o f the 15 consumer spackling and patching samples has shown that fiv e contained appreciable amounts o f ch ryso tile or. other asbestos m inerals, as did 9 o f the 10 in d u strial products. Many contained substantial amounts o f quartz, t a l c , and other m inerals. Once embedded in the lu ngs, quartz or s i l i c a p a r tic le s --lik e those o f asbestos--may never be removed. They can produce chronic obstructive and fib r o t ic diseases a ft e r p'rolonged exposure. Talc also can produce pulmonary fib r o s is . i- A ir samples obtained during the use o f asbestos-containing spackle compounds were analyzed and showed concentrations frequently in excess o f the current occupational standard fo r permissible asbestos exposure le v e ls . Fiber counts measured during mixing fo r example were found to be 7-12 times greater than the current occupational standard. Detectable fib e r concentrations were found in adjacent rooms during m ixing, and fib e rs were s t i l l suspended in the room a ir a t le a s t 15 minutes a fte r mixing had ceased. These findings suggest the pos s i b i l it y o f s ig n ific a n t asbestos exposure during home construction and re p a ir. Additional work by the s c ie n tis ts suggests that members o f the en tire household or other occupants o f a building may also inhale asbestos fib e r s . This could occur during mixing, sanding, or cleaning up o f debris. ( ( These resu lts are a lam in g when considered in relation to other evidence being accumulated by the Mount Sinai group th at indicates that fa r less than the intense exposure o f the work environment is capable o f producing asbestos- related disease. X-ray examination o f 210 fam ily contacts who lived with the men who produced asbestos in su lation a t a Paterson, New Je rse y , plant from 1941 to 1954 has shown th at 40 percent have the kinds o f abnormalities in th e ir lungs common to asbestos workers. In some ca se s, the worker had been a t the Paterson plant fo r only a few days. Thus, i t appears lik e ly th at the use o f sp ackling, patching, and taping compounds containing appreciable le v e ls o f asbestos minerals in home repair work d a y expose the user and other members o f the household to concentrations o f asbestos th at may lead to d isease. nn..
