Attention: Mr. Richard Lloyd, Dept. 121-H
Subject: Compressed Asbestos, Gasket Sheeting
'
J. Dear Mr. Lloyd: "
.A - 1 , . ; . ` .
-
This is to advise that above subject material is not ' ' "
classed as hazardous asbestos material under OSHA. .;. J..-. ..
regulations or as a material to consider as dangerous
-
: to enviromential emmissions.
. - . , .-
. The asbestos which is integrated with rubber dispersions
. "
and lubricated, such as packing does not freely separate .
itself from the composite. .
.
'
Compressed sheet can be cut and handled within the scope of a non hazardous material. S&uld the sheet be cut with a power saw or surface ground there would be a question which would require technical evaluation to determine if safe levels of fiber content in the air is exceded. .
' ' . :
This opinion is the result of inspections at manufactures
.
- of subject material. Asbestos caution labels are not :
required bn compressed sheet.
-
As a comparision with materials that require consideration '. '
for restriction due to asbestos fiber emissions we cite
-'
items such as untreated asbestos rope, wick and cloth. Even `
these as used or handled for short periods such as packing -
furnaces doors or stuffing boxes would not be considered
a health hazard. When these materials are handled continuously
consideration would be required for possible excessive fiber .
content in the area where persons are working with the
!
products or are in the area where dry asbestos products are .
handled.
.
.
'
Very truly yours, .
.
