Conclusions and findings of the November survey by our Industrial Hygienist, Mr. Griswold, were confirmed and discussed. As a result of our discussions, a follow-up atmospheric lead survey was made in June of this year. An evaluation of the exposure, engineering and medical control will be made as soon as the air samples taken are analysed and a report compiled. Barium Processes - Hydrogen Sul fide Gas The creation of hydrogen sulfide gas in the barium process developed a potential occupational disease exposure. The attention given to the development of a safe working environment and the adoption of suggested safe work practices appear to be effective in keeping the exposure under control. t-jedlcal Control of Employees The medical control program for employees has been evaluated during the year. The program, under the direction of Mr, Kendrick, appears to be an effective control of the lead level on the exposed personnel and operates as a medical cheek on the existing engineering controls for lead dust. Our Industrial Health Consultant, Mrs. Virginia Vhalen, R. N., visited the plant during June, 1956. This was her first trip to the CoffeyvUle area, and in the nature of an introductory visit prior to setting up your plant on a regularly scheduled itinerary. LIBERTY MUTUAL INSURANCE COMPANY 0007-SWP-000031003 Noise Potential - Packers and Raymond Mllla The tendency far State Workmen's Compensation Laws to recognise in dustrial loss of hearing claims brought the problem of the high noise level around the packers and Raymond Mills to our attention. Tour cooperation in writing to the manufacturers of the vibrators, which were the main noise sources, has resulted in obtaining information on quieter vibrators. Tou are, at the present time, experimenting with the new vibrators, and it is our understanding that they are proving effective in reducing the noise level. The reduction of noise at the source is always preferable to providing personal ear protection. Reduction of the noise 1s especially desir able in your operations where the employee is already required to wear respiratory protection. The limited number of industrial accidents reported mokes it difficult to develop any trends or patterns tram your industrial accidents through accident analyses. However, there is considerable manual labor reijuired la many of your operations, developing a potential for material handling accidents. Today, physical exertion has a tendency to increase the number of back and muscle strains reported, but fortunately, this has not become a reality at ycur plant. Here again, it is apparent that your Medical Program is paying dividends in the fora of lww accident cost. The problems considered in preceding sections of this report indicate the attention given to the potential far dicupational diseases from your operations. The control programs in effect are currently keep ing this exposure at a minimum. This review of your accident experience and accident prevention con trol program for three years and eight months reveals that your efforts are producing the desired result of lower accident costs.
