DELAWARE Dr. Willard Machle Dear Dr. Machle: I was very glad to receive your letter of October 17, pointing out the hygienic advantages to be gained by flushing drums of Fluid with smaller quantities of gasoline. My point in the matter was to make sure that any change in procedure of this type would only he accomplished after approval from your department, although I did not for a minute feel that Mr. Roberts might have been working on the matter without your knowledge. My point was merely to give Mr. Roberts all of the information which I had available on the subject, pointing out particularly that the problem had already been recognized and some experimental work had been done in the Baltimore Division. The data from those tests were by no means conclusive, but did show that the resultant lead concentrations in the drums were not too high to preclude the reduction of the gasoline wash. I do not knoxv whether the tests in Boston, were quantitative or not, any my belief is that we should investigate the matter very carefully before recommending a change. As I advised Mr. Roberts if the Manufacturing Department can cooperate in this matter, particularly by performing the analytical work, we should be glad to do so. Also, if any experimental work is contemplated perhaps you would like to try the relative merits of the baffle design suggested by the Boston Division against the orifice arrangement of the nipple that goes in the drum, I shall look forward to seeing you in November at the time of your next visit to the plant.
