McConnell, M.D. is an outstanding authority in the field of Industrial Health. He was graduated from the St. Louis School of Medicine in 1914* Afjjjer serving his intexnfcip at the Allegheny General hospital, he joined the Army Medical Corps and served as a first lieutenant on the Mexican border for more than a year. Wnen the United States entered World War 1 he served in France with the A.E.F., progressing to the rank of major. After the Armistice, he entered the United States Public Health Service and later became surgeon of tne United States Bureau of Mines. Prior to joining tlie Metropolitan he served as Medical Director of several industrial and health organi sations, such as tife Philadelphia Health Council and Tuberculosis Committee in 1925, where he conducted a demonstration of a plan giving adequate medical services to groups of small industrial plants. Co. and ti* Budd Wheel Co., Detroit, (1927-29)* Dr. McConnell was appointed to Company service in 1929 and was associated rith the Policyholders' Service Bureau during the early years of his service In the capacity of industrial hygienist and waB appointed Assistant Medical Director in 1930. In 1933 the Industrial Health and Safety Bureaus were transferred to the Health end Welfare Division. From 1940 to 1942 Dr. McConnell was loaned part-time &6 Consultant to the Industrial Hygiene Division of the Belted States Public Health Service for the purpose of directing a nationwide study of medical services in industry. He as again called to active service in tne Medical Corps of the Army in 1942 and served for four years, attaining the rank of colonel. In 1945 he was awarded the Legion of Merit for his work as Chief of the Ordnance Division where he was responsible for directing the in dustrial hygiene program. v / -2Dr. McConnell is the author of many articles on various industrial health activities) and did original research work at the Bureau of Mines on the physiological effects of idgh temperatuxes and humidities and on other problems in the field of ventilation. For several years he has been the author of seotlons in internationally knovn text books of medicine and industrial hygiene, and has contributed and continues to con tribute numerous articles on industrial medicine and hygiene to current medical and industrial journals* In addition to membership and work in many medical and industrial hygiene groups, Dr. McConnell is consultant to the Industrial Hygiene Division, United States Public Health Service, and to the Office of the Surgeon General, United States Army. Dr. McConnell directs the activities of the Industrial Hygiene Laboratory and the In dustrial Health Bureau of the Health and Welfare Division in meeting the needs for industrial hygiene servioe in l&rgerrrlndustries in the country, including steel production, mining, the manufacture of electrical equipment, particularly among in sured Groups.
