Monsanto Chemical' Company Texas City^ Texas Tos Plant Manager's Safety Board At: Texas City SUBJECT: CRITICAL SHOWER AND EYE BATH ALARMS As stated In the minutes of the Plant Manager's Safety Board meeting of July 13, the following status report on the above sub ject has been prepared. On January 4, 1957* Safety Suggestion 6319-S was submitted sug gesting the use of alarms on showers and eye baths to alarm other personnel to the aid of the Injured. This safety suggestion was considered meritorious In that, although not all eye baths and showers need to be so alarmed. It might be wise for certain of these facilities to have alarms, especially In areas where cor rosive chemicals are Involved. Therefore, on February 1, 1957 a request was made to Engineering for a design and estimate for such elLarms. This design was made and received general approval. On May 20, 1957* in a letter from H. V/. Callaway to C. L. Gilmore, the selections of the various area loctlons were Included. These were: Departments 19-20-25 Departments 22-23 Department 24 Departments 2-3 Department 31 Power 21 locations 8 locations 2 locations 6 locations 3 locations 6 locations On May 27, 1957* in a letter from C. L. Gilmore to J. S. Putnam, the method of handling the Installation of these alarms was pro posed. 1. Where shower and eye baths are from the same supply line only one alarm was re quired. 2. Each area would handle their own Instal lation on an Individual capital MRO basis. 3. This work would be done on the basis of one MRO per month in an area until the work Is completed. Mr. Putnam, by pencil comments on his copy. Informed me that the staff had been told to proceed--this note was dated June 7, 1957. SC 16776 LAM024045 SAFTY '. Putnam, three alarms were suggested for Installation In departments 4-S-7-8 and four in department 10. On October 21, 1958, in a letter from A. P. Wilcox to E. M. Jones, seven installations (Instead of six) were suggested in departments 2-3, and these installations would also Include green lights. The current status of this project is as follows, in so far as we have been able to check with supervision: Departments 1; 10; 4-8; 16; 17; 18; 4l; 42; and material handling do not plan on in stalling alarms. Departments 2-3; 5-7 and Power have completed installation of their alarms. Department AN; VCM; 24; and 31 have not Installed the alarms. It was my understanding, although I am unable to find written con firmation of this point, that it was the intent that this Job should be completed within two years from the time of approval. This would mean that since two years have elapsed, this Job should be completed now. Therefore, it is recommended that this project be expedited and a completion date of January 1,. i960 be set.
