Environmental Consultant Mr. John Ned Lipsitz May 11, 2000 Re: William Cooling Dear Mr. Lipsitz: I am writing to confirm that I discovered the file of William Cooling in the archives of Dr. Arthur Vorwald, located in the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, DC. This was one of the individual "patient files" in the Vorwald collection, which I examined on two separate occasions. The Cooling file struck me as especially interesting because of Mr. Cooling's position with Asbestos Corporation Ltd. The Cooling case was apparently one of the cases referred to by Dr. Cartier in his 1952 "discussion" published in the A. M. A. Archives of Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Medicine in 1952, where he listed as the last patient in Table 3 a "W.C." with 0 years of exposure, 28 years in (asbestos) industry, age at death 65, and "pleural mesothelioma". Dr. Cartier was describing the mortality of asbestos miners in Thetford Mines, where his clinic operated, and where Asbestos Corporation Limited was one of the several mining companies. I enclose the descriptive page from the Cooling file (I.M. 573) and Dr. Cartier's 1952 "Abstract of Discussion" from the Archives.
