In connection with our settlement conversations in Elrven, I did want to bring to your attention the surgical pathology report from Mainland Center Hospital, a copy of which is enclosed. Pathologists at Mainland Center and the Pathology Department at M.D. Anderson concurred in the fact that Mr. Eirven had metastatic adenocarcinoma not a hepatocellular carcinoma. In conversations earlier in ttiis case, I believe there was a mutual recognition of the impact of a metastatic adenocarcinoma diagnosis. Again, I would be happy to discuss this matter with you in further detail.

The specimen cons1sta of a somewhat fragmented gray-ten and red segment
of a needle biopsy of the liver having a total length of 6 mm. and a
< diameter of 1 mm. Jr

MICROSCOPIC;
'i Sections reveal needle liver biopsy showing predominantly a malignant neoplasm with glandular differentiation. The glands are lined by tall columnar epithelium with pseudostratification. Individual nuclear pleomorphism and hyperchronatlsa are noted. Focal areas of necrosis are also seen. The features are compatible with metastatic adenocarcinoma. The primary sites Include pancreas, gi tract# lung# etc.
The slides were sent In consultation to hd Anderson Hospital for their
opinion and they concurred with the diagnosis of adenocarcinoma. JA/lae/2-12-92
