To Keith Fogg From Tom Grumbles ate June 2, 1980 Subject LABORATORY FUME HOODS - FACE VELOCITY Properly functioning lab hoods are important in controlling exposures to laboratory personnel. The face velocity of a hood is the method by which one designs and achieves good control. The 125 fpm which was specified in 1978 for Class A hoods is a guideline that should be reached if feasible. There are no specific regulations governing hood velocities. If the current hoods can only achieve 100 fpm by design this is acceptable. No major modifications would be recommended to achieve 125 fpm. A face velocity of 100 fpm should be sufficient to control exposures if proper work practices are used.
