Interestingly enough (and entirely coincidentally!), you may have seen that yesterday Aurora announced they are now officially operating driver-out CMV service in Texas, hauling freight between Houston and Dallas (articles here, here, and also here). The announcement highlights what we said in our meeting. After 2.5 years of waiting, the issue has reached criticality. Aurora (and several other AV developers, as announced publicly) are moving into driverless CMV service in 2025, but they cannot scale the service without an exemption from the rule. At this point, and with all the data, law, and logic favoring exemption for flashing warning beacons, the reg is serving as the quintessential "unnecessary regulatory barrier" noted in last week's AV Framework, the removal of which would both "unleash innovation" and "enable commercial deployment" (and, frankly, would "prioritize safety" as the crash numbers show).
