MINUTES of the TECHNICAL k RESEARCH COMMITTEE. MEETING NATIONAL INSULATION MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION New York, N. Y. January 14, 1963 Glass Section The meeting was called to order at 9:30 A. N1MA STANDARDIZATION OF FIBER DIAMETER TESTERS It was agreed that it was desirable that standards for determining fiber diameter be established, Mr. Gubar will send three samples of fiber to members of the Committee for the purpose of calibrating existing micronaire equipment. The results are to be sent to the NIMA office prior to Mareh 1, 1963. Mr. Gubar is to send eopies of the Douglas Aircraft report on fiber dia meters to members of the Committee. Mr. Barnhart is to write to the Sheffield Corporation relative to standardi sation of the measurement of fiber diameters. DUCT LINERS Mr. C. E. Ernst is to circulate "Proposed Federal Specification, Insulation Felt, Thermal and Acoustical, Mineral Fiber (For Low and Elevated Tem peratures" to the Glass Section and Rock li Slag Section for perusal. Copies of a letter from the Underwriters' Laboratories relating to adhesives will be circulated to the Glass Section and the Rock l< Slag Section. In this respect, it was suggested that each individual company work with the adhesive manufacturers. 2 It was brought to the attention of those present that California is requiring identification of duct liners with respect to Underwriters1 Laboratories acceptance. It was suggested that a code designation for identification of the product be used, such as company name -A L? (for Listed Product with Underwriters', Mr. Barnhart brought to the Committee's attention the desire of the Board of Directors to reconsider the subject a product identification with respect to density, it was agreed that the following should be used to identify duct wrap: 1. 3 slash lines - 1/2 pcf to, but not including 3/4 pcf material, nominal density. 2 slash lines - 3/4 pcf to, but not including 1 pcf material, nominal density. 1 slash line - 1 pcf to, but not including 1-1/4 pcf material, nominal density. 2. The series of slash lines (on the diagonal) shall be placed every three feet along the length of the blanket and shall be placed 24" apart along the width of the blanket (ie, on the 12", 36" and 60" mark on a 72" wide blanket). Both sides of the blanket shall be marked. 3. The fine fibered material shall be identified by marking in a blue color. The textile fibered material shall be identified by marking in a green color. hi view of the adverse report on fire tests of fibrous glass duet systems that were indicated by Southwest Research Institute, it was agreed that fire testa should be made in the individual company laboratories on duct liners. These tests shall be completed prior to March 1, 1963, for discussion at the next Glass Section Meeting. fa testing, the following shall apply: 1. A horizontal 24 foot long duct 8" square shall be used (26 gage metal). 2. 1" thickness ai duct liner (fine fiber) be fastened to the interior of the duct with sheet metal screws and a 1" round washer, spaced 24" apart. 3. Johns-Manville to test 1-1/2 pcf material. Owens-Corning to test 2 pcf material. Gustin-Bacon to test 3 pcf material. 3 4. Tests shall be conducted on (a) Plain material (b) Coated material - with a flame spread approximately 25 (c) Coated material with the highest rated flame spread being offered. 5. The burner shall be constructed efith 2-1/2" round-standard nipple with a standard reducer of 2-lA2*x 3/4". A standard 2-1/2" cap shall be screwed on the nipple. 8-3/3 holes shall be drilled, squally spaced on the perphery of the nipple (approximately 1" from the edge of cap). 6. Adjust gas (natural) to obtain a flow of 3. 75 cfzn. Adjust air flew to obtain a velocity of 250 fpm thru the duct. 7. In addition to recording the results of your observation of the tests, record the total ignition loss of the material. STANDARDIZATION OF FACINGS The list dated 8/22/60 is to be circulated to the Committee for discussion with the company product managers.
