L. Royer, H. E. Bonds, E. J. Mulligan, H. W. Fritts, E. B. Robinson, R. S. Cain, C. L. Green, J. L. Laudenberg and Dr. V. H. Barbour. Old Business: Mr. Laudenberg's memorandum of April 18, 1969 containing safety and hygiene practices for Chlor-Alkali Department was discussed and is being appended to these minutes. These regulations have been well received by employees. Mr. E. F. Hohlfelder's letter to mechanical engineers and maintenance foremen urging compliance with Mr. Laudenberg's regulations was also mentioned. Mr. Hohlfelder feels that cartridge type filters are not sufficient on certain maintenance operations. Masks with air supplies will be used by welders. All Chlor-Alkali employees now have two lockers in R-lh6 separated from other employees. Curves showing atmospheric mercury concentrations at several locations were presented and examined. Improvement in cell room ventilation has been made. Work will be completed by July 1, 1969* Two mercury buggies are now being used to reduce exposure to mercury while handling. Sweeping of control room has been discontinued. Nov use only vacuum cleaner and mop. Trenches will be recoated and weekly cleanups scheduled. Mercury consumption decreased in April. A [t? Little work has been done on monitoring gaseous fluorides at plant boundary since we have not received the Leigh instrument now on order. Since it now appears that there might be some delay in receipt of this instrument, some preliminary work will be done using conventional impinger apparatus. Contractor has almost finished removing dust from monitor catwalk in Potroom 6. New Business: Will experimentally try one special nozzle with built-in pressure reducer for blowing bauxite and alumina dust off clothing. In process of re-evaluating chemicals used for mosquito control. After consultation with County mosquito control authorities, decision has been made to use Malathion dust. We are presently negotiating with County Health Department regarding possibility of County dusting around plant site. Machining of Marinite was discussed. Hooding and exhaust system is being revised in mold shop. Bldg. 13E. Working of Marinite will be concentrated in this building. The use of air operated tools instead of electrical tools by contractors in Chlor-Alkali was discussed. Contractors should be able to use air tools. No testing has been done in potrooms with regard to compliance with hygiene regulations in Walsh-Healy Act. Plan to use Leigh instrument now on order for this. " Engine house exhaust stacks are still being sampled periodically for nitrogen oxides and lubricating oil. No information has been received on status of modification of activated alumina masks to make them more acceptable to potroom personnel. The Ifaion will be briefed at 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 19, on plans for collecting urine specimens for fluoride determinations. Foremen will be briefed prior to talking with Union. Arrangements are underway and samples will be collected June 2-9- HEB:re Attach. File copy routed: Mr. E. L. Wahlsten Mr, H. P. Armintrout Mr. C. A. Belcolore Mr. John Minter H. E. BONDS ALCOA0000472
