That makes the cancer death rate there double or triple the national norm.
KTRK-TV (Ch. 13), 6 p.m., December 3, 1981 ANCR: Well, a federal study shows that 23 workers at the Union Carbide plant down in Texas City died of brain cancer, possibly caused by exposure to chemicals. That conclusion was made after they studied people who worked at the plant between 1941 when the facility opened and 1977. A company study covering 6,600 present and former employees showed only 12 brain cancerrelated deaths since the plant opened. Both studies indicate the disease strikes the employees there at a rate 2 to 3 times higher than the national average.
