Process Description: The facility operates as an industrial laundromat that processes mostly hotel laundry. The facility operates up to 12 hours per day, 7 days per week, depending on customer orders. Pillows cases, clothing and smaller items are washed in one of three single load washers. Sheets, towels and other linens are washed in a multi-stage washing machine that can process up to 30,000 pounds of laundry a day. Cleaning soaps and chemicals are withdrawn directly from storage by a system of pumps and are added to the machine in premeasured amounts. The multi-stage washing machine has two vents that vent directly out the roof. Washed linens exit the multi-stage washer and are automatically pressed to remove water before entering one of four Milnor, natural gaspowered industrial dryers. Each dryer has two stacks, one exhaust and one intake. A fabric filter bag is used to capture lint from the dryers. Dried linens are ironed and folded in automatic machines that use a heating oil system to heat press any wrinkles out. Ironed and folded linens are sent by truck back to customers. The facility operates one perchloroethylene dry cleaning machine that was installed in May 20 I8. Staff Interview: Mr. Patel stated that the roll iron machines use a wax to maintain consistent products and that the towels and sheet are partially wet when fed into the heated rolls. Mr. Patel stated that ventilation stacks were added to the tunnel washing machine at the request of City of Chicago inspectors because the machine diagrams indicate ventilation location and that the manufacturer typically recommends capping the outlets during normal operations. The facility recently switched to new washing products, manufactured by Ecolab. In July 2018, the facility started operating its relocated a dry-cleaning machine and began dry cleaning operations. The dry-cleaning machine uses perchloroethylene, but Mr. Patel stated that he had no knowledge of any compliance submittals. The tunnel washing machine and industrial driers were not operating at the time of the inspection. Photos and/or Videos: were taken during the inspection. Perchloroethylene (PCE) usage at the facility since dry cleaning operations began. 3. Monthly and/or weekly checks for vapor leaks on the dry-cleaning machine since operations began 4. Specify whether a refrigerated condenser or carbon adsorber is used to control emissions of PCE from the dry-cleaning machine. 5. Notification of Compliance Status Compliance Assistance: Facility staff were informed that by using perchloroethylene the facility was subject to the National Perchloroethylene Air Emissions Standards for Dry Cleaning Facilities and that the regulations require the facility to submit a notification of compliance to the state.
