Box 158 Herculaneum, MO 63048 Dear Dan: The Lead Industries Association has recently awarded a contract with TRC to calculate the number of children who may be at risk from lead on the basis that they reside in proximity to a primary or secondary lead smelter or battery manufacturing facility. The EPA has estimated that the total population of children at risk is approximately.250,000. We feel that this estimate is inflated and thus, the need to have TRC carry out a more thorough evaluation. In addition to determining the total number of children exposed, we are also trying to obtain information from past blood lead sampling programs around point sources to try to get an estimate on what percentage of these children could be expected to exceed a level of 25 ug/dl. It would even be more desirable if we could get the total number of children whose blood lead level fell into the following ranges: <10; 11-15; 16-20; 21-25; 26-30;> 31. Would it be possible for you to contact the agency who did the study around the Herculaneum plant to see if they would release the data in that form. If so, we would appreciate receiving it as soon as possible so we can try and determine the number of children at risk in each of the blood lead categories. Warmest regards. Robert D.
