Dear Mr. Van Hartesveldt: I send you herewith copies of letters representing an exchange of correspondence with Doctor James G. Townsend, Medical Director and Chief of the Division of Industrial Hygiene of the Public Health Service. I believe that this exchange of correspondence will be self-explanatory, but it seems best to send you the exact copies in order that you will know what I said and in order that you will know also what Doctor Townsend said in reply. This leaves us pretty much in the situation of dealing with this matter as we think best. On the other hand, I feel quite certain that we shall have to have fairly good information on what trans pires in Puerto Rico in order to be familiar with the situation ourselves and in order to be able to transmit information, as it may be required,to Doctor Townsend. It would be most unfortunate if thi3 situation were handled in a casual manner, and therefore I should appreciate having your comments on any aspect of i t . On my next opportunity,! shall discuss this situation with Doctors Gehrmann and Rankin of Du Pont in order that I may be informed as to what they plan to do and in order that they may know what I have in mind and how they can best cooperate. I imagine that you will want us to get our experimental program on the 6 c.c. mix under way. It seems likely that some of this work can be done this summer,while I am out of the country.
