Dear Rex
I do apologise for taking so long to answer your letter of 6 October . regarding deaths from angiosarcoma of the liver. I had a certain amount of difficulty deciding which particular International Classification ^ disease heading this would be under since one reference book suggested code No 197*7 but, since this is for secondaries, this did not seen to be th right one. It seems that it could therefore be coded either under 155*0 which is for malignant neoplasm of liver and intrahepatic bile ducts, specified as primary (155*0 referring to the liver and 155*1 to intrahepatic bil ducts) or 197*8 which is for malignant neoplasm, secondary of respiratory and digestive systems, but this code (197.8) being for cases unspecified as to whether it is primary or secondary.
As you know medical statistics take some time to come out so that the latest figures that I can get are for 1972. They are taken from the Health Statistics report, mortality and demographic data put out by the National Health Statistics Centre and the figures of deaths for the last three years are:
ICD Code No
1972
1971
1970
155*0 197.8
Males 27 - Females 15

For what it*s worth the age distribution under 155.0 is 1 male in the 15-20 years
ag group, 15 males in the 40-65 age groupj 1 female in the 20-25 age group and 6 f males in the 40-65 group in 1972. In 1971 there was 1 male in the 20-25 ag group and 22 in the 40-65 age groupj there was 1 female in the 10-15 group and 9 in the 40-65 years. In 1970 there were 2 males in the 10-15 years group 3 in the 25-40 group and 15 in the 45-65 groupj there was 1 female in the 25-30 group and 2 in the 45-65 age group, I hope this may be some use to you and again apologise for taking so long. Hopefully the computer exercise on which I am now very much involved might provide us with figures very much sooner!
With kind regards
Yours sincerely
