The limit of quantitation for PFOA in sediment was 2.0 ng/g. The standard sediment method (V00017S2) was originally used to extract all of the samples. Use of this method yielded poor spiking recoveries for PFOA Because of this, a direct injection method (Section 6.2) was used, which also yielded poor recoveries. Poor recoveries were obtained for PFOS, PFOA and MC PFOA. Because of this, the study sponsor requested the use of an alternative extraction for these compounds, es foiows: Direct Injection Method: Before the samples were weighed for the extraction, they were mixed thoroughly by vigorously shaking the container. A one-gram portion of sediment was weighed into a 15-m*itrter cantrifuge lube h r the extraction. Ten m#*itefs of 1% acetic acid In methanol was added to each sample. The samples were then shaken by hand, vorlexed, and sonicated for thirty minutes. The samples were then centrifuged for -10 minutes at -3000 rpm. Each sample was analyzed by LC/MS/MS etodroepray. Using this method acceptable data was obtainedfor PFOS. but the recoveries for PFOA and UC PFOA were sdl poor. Another atomattve method sms then used for PFOA and C PFOA as foSows. Alternative SPE Method: The samples thatwere prepared in 1% acetic acid tor the direct injection method were used tar Vtssextraction. Fwe m iMere of each sample woe atquoted Info a 50-rnL polypropylene centrifuge tube and the volumewas taken to 40 mLwfth water. The samples were lltan ' canthfoged for-10 minutes a t-3000 rpm. The supernatant was Stan loaded onto a C ,, SPE cartridge conditioned wRh 10 mL of methanol and 5.mL of water. The ekiata wee diecardod. Approximately five mllMters of methanol was added to the cartridge. Five mflliitars of efoete was collected into a graduated 15 mL potypropytena cantrifuge tube.
