While I am not exactly sure where the Shell Oil program is going with respect to SO programs and processes, I am starting to get a better idea by reviewing the materials that have been made available. I also have some ideas of my own that might be of interest I would welcome the opportunity to discuss these with you and, of course, would hope these ideas would be used in support of my 'Pathways' application for the SO manager position. In most (but not all) cases, these thoughts represent an effort to build on my current expertise and professional contacts, yet I am aware that many additional opportunities would present themselves: i) I am currently working with a consortium to study health effects of benzene in China. This extensive program has developed benefits beyond the actual science of benzene hazard and risk evaluation. The program is an example of what is possible in engaging the Chinese community (universities, governmental agencies, and soon the public) in understanding an important health issue. The program has also engaged medical ethics experts in the US and China. 2) I am also working with the relatively new American Chemistry Council Strategic Science Team that funds research of interest to the chemical industry. My current involvement is particularly directed at understanding hazards to humans and the environment related to reproduction and development (the ultimate of SD). I am the chairman of this subcommittee. Regardless, the American Chemistry Council Long Range Research Initiative is a good example of industry interested in doing the right thing and the Shell involvement could be publicized. 3) working with contacts at universities to seek biotechnology solutions to Shell issues, such as bioremediation. I already have contacts at several major universities that have significant biotechnology capabilities. 4) working with Shell locations and their surrounding community groups to develop child safety programs. The chemical and petrochemical industries have been recently negatively implicated in national children's health issues, and Shell Chemicals (US) has been participating in an EPA volunteer chemical testing program via industry committees (via the American Chemistry Council and the American Petroleum Institute). However, prevention of childhood accidents can have a much greater real impact on children's health as accidents are the number one cause of childhood death and injury. While the American Chemistry Council has developed a policy to deal with children's health, the childhood safety part of this program has been dormant for several years. It still remains an idea to be developed. Shell could consider leading the way. 5) Emerging air and water quality issues within the US EPA might provide opportunities for Shell to step-out as a leader and to communicate our leadership. In short these are a few possibilities for SO and Shell Oil in the US and, as mentioned, I would SHELL-MCCLURG-064301 welcome the opportunity to discuss these, I am certainly aware of the need to develop, quantify and communicate a much more comprehensive program and I would be anxious to engage further.
