Analysis of Sant ora?- R
DESCRIPTION
Santowax R is a yellow solid hydrocarbon mixture of micro-crystalline structure. The main constituents are ortho-terphenyl, meta-terphenyl with amaller quan tities of diphenyl and tri-orthophenylene present.
The molten product le chilled cn a flaking rcll and bagged or put in paper lined barrels for shipment.
LABORATORY TESTS:
1. Color: 3-5 - *.5 MPA
Test Method: A portion of the sample la melted
slowly over a low heat. Care should be taken not to overheat the sample. Some darkening due to
decomposition is possible If the sample le heated above 250C for any length of time. The molten
sample Is poured Into s clean 1.5 mm test tube and the color is compared to the standard disc comparator of the National Petroleum Association.
.2 Hold Points: Upper hold point 137-lt3C
Lower hold point k5-6C<>C
Changed tot '
Method: A 250 cc beakor la filled about three fourths filled with the flaked saapl* and placed am the hot plate to melt. After the molten sample
has attained a temperature of 175-200OC, the stirrer and thermometer are plaoed in the beaker. The SMterlal Is allowed to cool while stirring
until crystals appear In the liquid. Then the thermometer Is watoh closely to see If the temperature holds as the sample crystallises. This temperature where the thermometer reads constant
for a few minutes Is known aa the upper held point.
The stirrer la removed and the sample Is now al
lowed to oool to about 8oC. The sample is then stirred by hand with the thermometer. The chilled material on the aides of the beaker must be lntlmately mixed with the molten sample In the middle at all times. The temperature at whloh the ther
mometer stopa after It goes down and rises to 1 to 30 i* called the lower hold point.

3. Distillation F.ans;e: At least 80 per cent between 350-*OOoc (uncrr.)
Method: ASTM D-20 (modified)
The apparatus Is designated In the ASTM method and consists of a flask, condenser tube, shield, receiver, and thermometer.
After assembly of the apparatus Is complete, the sample la melted and etirred to insure proper blend ing.
One hundred grams of the sample le weighed Into the flask, the flask Is put In placs and heat la applied so that tha first drip comes over in from 5 to 15 minutes. The distillation shall bs conducted at the -ate of 50-70 drops per minute and the distillate collected in a weighed receiver.
The temperatures recorded shall be at the first drop and at each 10 degree Interval between 350-400C, the per oent distilled over shall alao be noted.
This distillation range specification is subject to change as more history on this test of the prod uct is obtained.
t. Sediment Teat: There shall be no Insoluble Impur ities in a molten sample of the product.
Method of Sampling: It will be very difficult to obtain a good sample for this test and, therefore, tha bast means of having a clean product is to el iminate the sources of impurities and kaap a check on these souroas.
Por the above test, a 3 or K pound sample could be malted at hourly Intervals to see if Impurities were present.
