Paugh Franklin Sunderland October 9, 1985 HS&EA Industrial Hygiene Asbestos Monitoring at Institute Plant Attached are the results of asbestos exposure monitoring conducted on September 27, 1985 while construction employees stripped approximately 200' of insulation from an 8" water line at the west end of the polyols unit near building 8354. The stripping was done using two Insulators and cleanup was done by two laborers. A spray of water was used to wet down the insulation and to minimize dust. The area was barricaded and signs were posted designating the area as a potential asbestos hazard. All four employees wore disposable respirators, face masks, coveralls, rubber boots and solvex gloves. Employees removed and disposed of their contaminated protective equipment when leaving the barricaded area and used new disposable protective equipment when returning. All samples were found to contain asbestos fiberSfllje'Tafo the permissable exposure level of 2.0 fibers per cc of air. Th'^sample collected on B. J. Day was at a higher level than what we normally collect and was just below the action level of 1.0 fiber per cc of air. None of the employees involved did any asbestos related work either before the start or after the completion of the job. It was therefore possible to compute the time weighted average (TWA) exposures for the entire eight hour work day. It is recommended that the asbestos be bagged at the point of removal and not dropped to ground level, piece by piece, thus reducing the amount of airborne dust.
