Asbestos Monitoring at South Charleston Plant
Attached are the results of asbestos exposure monitoring conducted on November 18, 1985 at the South Charleston polyols unit near Building 103. Construction employees stripped the insulation from a tank 13 feet in diameter and 30 feet tall.
The stripping and bagging was done by eight men, four were monitored. One man was monitored-at the base of the tank while receiving and removing the bags of asbestos as they were lowered from the scaffold. A spray of water was used to wet the insulation and minimize dust. The area was barricaded and well posted for the asbestos hazard. All nine employees wore disposable respirators, disposable head covers, disposable coveralls, boots and solvex gloves. The protective equipment was removed upon leaving the barricaded area and used new equipment upon returning.
All samples were found to be well below the allowable exposure level of 2 fibers/cm^. This indicates that a good job is being done of controlling the amount of airborne dust by water spray, and bagging at the point of removal.
