BUILDING DISMANTLEMENTS It Is the responsibility of the Mechanical Area which services a building to determine which lines and equipment have asbestos bearing insulation on them. The lines and equipment must be clearly marked so that anyone working on the job will know where the asbestos is located. The labor costs for this identification work should be charged to an area work order and those charges transferred to the project when It is written. When a building dismantlement Is scheduled (see attached Chambers Works Dismantlement Schedule, dated July 3, 1979) the responsible Mechanical Area shall take action to determine the amount of asbestos insulation In the building. This Information is required by the Project Engineer when determining the scope of work. The Area must Inventory each line or piece- of equipment which contains white goods." This Inventory will include line sire and length for all pipelines as well as equipment sires and amount of Insu lation (In square feet) on the equipment. The area must be able to provide adequate evidence, either by sampling or installation prints, that lines and equipment are not covered with asbestos bearing Insulation. The Inventory and sample data will be used to estimate costs of the project and to provide a basis for notifica tion of regulatory agencies. Notification requirements are outlined in M.D.P. #60. The Project Engineer, using form Attach ment "A," will provide notification Information on dismantlements. Material identification should start as soon after scheduling as possible. Turnaround time on some past sampling has been 4-6 weeks. MOP #60 'Control of Asbestos Dust" must be followed by personnel while obtaining samples for evaluation. The following procedure Is to be followed to ensure proper Identification of samples with respect to the equipment or lines. 1. Using the work sheet Attachment "B" for identification, obtain the necessary samples, clearly Identifying each sample spot. Make a sketch, if needed, to provide necessary details.. 2. It is only necessary to provide one-half cubic inch of material for each sample. Each sample must be in a plastic bag (baggie site) clearly identified with building name and number, equipment number, and sample identification infor mation, e.g.. Information that will locate where on a line or piece of equipment that sample was obtained. 3.
