Drown, Jr,, who stated that he had invited (r, Gouveia to attend this meeting as a guest* Hr* Ted D* McCluskey was present as a guest, as ex plained ia the minutes of the February meeting* 2* The Secretary presented the minutes of the last meeting* Xt was moved by IT. Hough and seconded by !r. Rainey that the reading of same be omitted. So voted* 3* The Financial Report was presented by Treasurer E.A. Schumaa* After discussion of the re*^ort it was noved i r. Rainey, seconded by Mr* Teele, that the report be accepted* So voted unanimously* 4* President Brown referred to the vacancy on the Board of Gover nors due to the resignation of rr* J.T. Griffis prior to our last meeting* and stated that be had received a letter from lx* S.I*. Nesvig, Vice Pres* and Gen* igr*. of li.K. Porter Company, under date of May 25th in which Mr* Nesvig said they would like to delay mking any recommendation until later this year* Xt was agreed that we would not press for an immediate decision, and this matter will be Placed oo the agenda for our October meeting* 3* Troposed modification in A.T* dues* Following the last meet ing, s committee of two was splinted by President Brown to survey the financial condition of the Institute and submit a preliminary report as to whether -some modification in does should be considered in view of the sizeable reserve funds now on band* Mr* Teele, Chairman, and / r* Sebuman, serve as the committee* Mr. Teele said they had not arrived at a definite recommendation as yet, as there were many factors to consider* For example* should A.T.I* consider membership in the Industrial Hygiene Foundation of America, Inc*, slso should we lead some financial support to their proposed research prograa related to effects of asbestos on health* If so, this could drain off some of our surplus funds at whatever rate we wished* i i  o w I o l X Minute* Board of Governors ioeting rage -2- 5* continued Vr* Hough remarked that his company had already agreed to lend very substantial monetary support to the Industrial Hygiene Pounds* tios in respect to its proposed research program concerning effeeta of asbestos on health) and suggested that others consult with their respective company managements to see what, if any additional sup* port would be promised* This would have a bearing on what aetion the AT*1. might take in respect to direct support of the Industrial Hygiene Foundation* There was general agreement to this suggestion* f-r* Sehuasn made a motion that the a*T*1. should join the Indus trial Hygiene Foundation of America, Inc*, saying that he understood this would cost $100*00 per year* ix* Rainey seconded this motion* So voted, unanimously. The Secretary will proceed to make applica tion for membership* Purther discussion of any modification of dues was tabled until the next meeting* 6* President Crown appointed a Nominating Conrittee composed of 5*J leele, Jr*, as Chairman, with W.S. nough and Ted 0. JcCluskey* This Committee will canvass the Regular members of the Institute to see who will represent them on the Coard of Governors for the coining year, and subrit a slate of officers for election at the annual meeting in October* Terms expiring are President, Vice President and Treasurer* Chairmen of the several working committees are now in their first year of service and should be continued for another year granting both they and their respective companies are agreeable* ?* President Drown informed the members that hehad advised the Secretary under date of Jiarch 4, 2966, that by unanimous approval of the Board of Governors the remuneration of the Executive Secretary was increased from $1200*00 to $1500*00 per year, and also the si* lowance for office rental and typing expense from $500*00 to $900*00 per year, effective January 1st, 1966* The Secretary expressed his sincere appreciation for this in crease* 8* Caruso complaint* The Secretary stated that fr* Caruso had com plained that he had to send out "Corrected .kiarterly Reports'* very frequently due to inaecuracy of figures supplied him by members* He asks that a special effort be cade in future to send him correct figures initially* 9* The Secretary read a letter from l/.ll. Johnston, V.P. & Goi* I'gr* of the Atlas Asbestos Company, North v;iics, ra., dated April 5, 1966, an which Nr* Johnston expressed regret that the "membership require ments of the Institute rule them out on a technicality", for while they do not spin their own yarn, they nevertheless coosider them selves a lepat of the asbestos textile industry - unique though their position may^be* The matter was discussed at sane length, but no aetioa was taken on it* 10* 2nd Bdition - Fibre Test iianual* It was agreed that the Secre tary should assemble the total cost of the Second Edition and 4v?4e same by the total copies for which he had firm orders, in order arrive at the average cost per cony* This average, plus any freight charges on individual shipments, to be the basis for billing member companies, and ?*A*i`*A* and i ineral Piber Products Duresu,. Vinute* Board of Governors feting Page -3- < 10 continued So far as direct sales by the Secretary to non-affiliated per sons is concerned, the price to remain at $7,50 per cony, sane as has been in effect for the First Edition, 11, aT 1 Exhibit - t*x, Hough stated that he had hoped to place i our exhibit in the Franklin Institute taseum, Philadelphia, Pa*, for an extended period of time, following his re rsonal visit there last December* Their decision, long delayed, was not favorable* ''/bile they think we have "a very nice exhibit on asbestos, it is not tte type of exhibit which would fit properly into our museum." -- "we try to make sll our exhibits 'Visitor participating", and since yours is the static type, we would be unable to properly utilize it" - are quotes from their letter of rejection. ;r. Hough said that the Sales Promotion Conmittee is now consid ering the preparation of a brochure describing the Exhibit, with pic tures, and a widespread mailing of same in an effort to line up pro spective exhibitors. Our exhibit is nov' in a warehouse at Troy, H.Y., and it was last exhibited at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 12. Griffin, Project Director, Commercial Research, had been invited to attend our General /eeting on June 10, 1966* 14* Dr* L.J. Cralley was asked to tell the Board of Governss about the forward program of the U.S.r.iJ. Dept* - Dr* Cralley said he thinks things look nore encouraging at, this tine - some reorganizations axe going os in the departfliefiiv The "Dept." will support the work to be done by Dr. Paul Gross of the Industrial Hygiene Foundation by making available to then the sun of $35,000*00. Or. Cralley says the best hope of getting lesdership is thru Industrial Hygiene Foundation and Dr. Gross's work* Mr* Hough asked when we might expect tangible re* suit froo environmental study, and Dr* Cralley estimated that we might have to wait 3 or 4 years * said quickest data could come fnm Dr* Gross's research program on animals* 1 IS*. .essera Srown and Rainey will discuss the question of a speaker for our October meeting, and fc t the .Secretary know the decision* o 16* lhe next meeting will be held October 6th and 7th at The Home stead, Hot Springs, Va* Reservations are required at least thirty days in advance* Members are urged to bring their wives to this meeting.
